Going off the Burns night and Scottish delicasies thread I wondered what other foodstuffs get eaten in certain parts of these isles?

I have no doubt there are certain foods common to a region which would appear totally unpallatable to people from different areas.

I once overheard a couple of southerners who were completely aghast when they saw a load of post football match Yorkshiremen tucking into bowlfulls of pork pie, mushy peas and mint sauce in a nearby WMC!!!
Common fodder where we come from but surprisingly (to me) alien to these two guys.

Yorkshire pudding eaten before your Sunday roast, accompanied by thick onion gravy. Mmmmmm, delicious!

Anyone else eaten a bowl of Pobs? :D
Basically it's bread in hot milk. I'm lead to believe it was a popular wartime meal but unsure how widespread the delicacy was.

Being from Gods own county I too partake in a Yorkie before dinner.

I thought this was "normal" throughout the UK until after the first time my mrs had sunday dinner with the parents.

She confessed some years later she thought we were dead poor as all we were having was a Yorkie with gravy!

In a similar vein the landlord of my local pub brings out fresh cooked yorkshire puddings and meat gravy as a Sunday lunchtime snack for the regulars.

People think I am mad because I put mint sauce on my peas.

Actually, I put mint sauce on everything, so maybe I am mad :D

My mum did the bread and sugar thing, too, Murph and I occasionally had it as a kid. Dry porridge oats and sugar stirred up in a cup, too.

Clootie dumpling! Reckon most Scots will know.

I remember the butter and sugar sandwich. I also remember my pals mum giving them COLD scotch pies for dinner in winter. It was years later my mum told me that my pal had their gas cut off and didnt have a cooker.

I love scotch pies, but I also love yorkshires, we used to sometimes have a dirty great big one then fill it with various fillings like mince onion and potatoe or swede, carrots or maybe just beans, if we were feeling really rich we'd have meat lobbed in there too. But you cant beat a bloody good homemade steak and ale pie chips and mushy peas after a good round of golf, had that at one club and loved it.

I still do fried bread (olive oil not dripping) and baked beans when I have a hang over. Soaks up the alcohol.

Or if the bevvy session is a planned one and I have been to the shops I have fried pancakes and baked beans.

Yorkshire pudding at the start of a meal completely threw my kids years ago when we visited friends in Bingley. They were worried that was all they would get to eat.

Also enjoyed prok pie, mushy peas and mint sauce in a works canteen with the directors of the company I was working at .It became a staple diet over a 6 month period. Still enjoy it today when I get the chance.

Not only had the Yorkies before lunch and with it but also been known to have the "extras" with sugar or syrup after lunch.

Pork pies, mushies & mint Mmmmmmm

Bread & dripping

Ox tails in broth

Ham & lentil soup (thick)

Banana tea bread

I could go on and on but it's making me hungry so just going for a spoon of condensed milk. :p
