Whats your shot of choice if you're out of reach of a par5 in 2, or just a course plotter?

Fairway wood/hybrid to get as close as you can? long iron? mid iron?

A couple of PP do the first but tend to mess up either with the shot itself or leaving them too close to the green for a decent club.

For me, its a punch/trap draw with a 4/5 iron. Really not sure why I like it so much. Aim at the right edge of the fairway and draw it back into position for a nice full club. Purdy ;)

If I know I can't reach in two, I take the potential disaster off the tee out of the equation, and hit 3 wood. Then it's what will get me to 130 from the green - it used to be 150 but I'm old now.

Assuming I'm not playing a recovery shot after the tee shot and so on the fairway or semi, I'd be looking to get to somewhere around the 70-100 yard mark, depending on where bunkers and hazards are, and trust my short game. Worked to a degree at the FoA and Hillside and something I need to think about more at my own course where familiarity makes me make poor club selection decisions at times

Get as close as I can and if I do mess the second shot up, hope it still leaves me with a third shot into the green, sadly😃

as little club as possible and hit it hard, makes me focus, if i try and hit a little soft one i tend to get handsy and can miss left if not careful

Guess will depend on what's in front of the green , what lie I have , the distance to the green , bunkers

Happy laying up to 100 or getting as close as possible - don't think I have a go to tbh

Depends on how short I'm going to be in 2..and how much trouble there is if I get it wrong..!
Yesterday I had 220 into the wind into a Par 5, knew I wouldn't reach but felt I could get to within a few yards of the green leaving a straightforward chip and putt for a birdie. Had I hit a lay up to, say, 100 yards, I probably wouldn't have been as close in 3 so would have had a harder putt.
If I'm going to be 40+ yards short then I'll leave myself around 100/120 in..

If I can get to about 80yrds out, I'm happy but I wouldn't try and blast a 3w or hybrid to get there. Slowly learnt that the hard way :D

In Summer a short iron PW or maybe an 8 or 9 iron assuming drive is decent. But in Winter that could be a 7 Wood or rescue. Ideally like to leave around 130-100 yards inb

All things being even, if I couldn't reach I'd try to get as close to the green as possible. The closer I am the better chance of an up and down. If it's too risky to try to get close id lay up to about 75 yards, or about 100 if that wasn't possible.

This!! With all things being equal, I think most golfers are kidding themselves with leaving a full shot into the green etc etc. Unless you are seriously hot with a wedge you will put more balls closer to the pin from 30 yards than you will from 100.

The one thing I did cope with well on Wednesday at Hayling Island was paring the par 5's, no chance to get on in 2 so it was mini driver off the tee giving up distance for accuracy then a 5 iron to leave on average 80-ish yards, I even chipped in on the 14th from 88yds 😎🏌⛳️

Usually it's a hybrid, I'm confident hitting it both ways and it's good out bad lies if need be (which it often is)!

But more recently I've been carrying a 2 iron instead especially on links ground, it's tougher off the ground obviously so I've been reverting to a 4/5 iron which still works quite well

I usually like to be as close to the green as possible as I like to manipulate my wedges anyway so have no set distance preference

Straightforward pin position and I'll try and get as close as possible and just rely on my short game.

If its a little tucked I'll try to leave around 100 yards so I can play a full 52 in.

Anyone who thinks they can make birdies without getting close to the green is deluded. It really is that simple.

Lay up to 80-150 is the safer bet for par and the odd birdie.

Check put the proximity to the hole the pros makes from those distances.

Saying that, there is plenty of par 5s you can miss by miles on one or both sides and get away with it. It is worth 'getting it down there' on those holes. Other times when there is plenty of danger, the smart play is to lay up.

Take each hole on it merits and where your tee shot leaves you.
