I had a look at another golf forum that I'm not a member of. One of the posters asked if it was against the rules to have your name on your bag and was told that it was- something to do with amateur status.
Is this true? What do you do if your partner in a competition has his/her name on his/her bag? Quite a few of the players here do.

Not breaking any amateur status rules to my knowledge. Whether your name is on a small bag tag or emblazoned across your whole bag matters not. What if your name was MacGregor or Wilson??

Thanks Birdieman. I've had a look at the rule book (which is what I should have done in the first place, I suppose) and there seems to be nothing that says you can't have your name on your bag.
Probably the other guy was just another golfer talking a load of b******s. Not unusual.

It's clearly not against any rules on amateur status. Check out the amateurs' bags at the Walker Cup in September. They'll all have their names on them.

I suppose if you had your name on your bag it would put people off nicking it. Would anyone go for the myjoys option of name on shoe?
