I find it quite funny how we use the word pro so loosely,my so called pro basically owns the shop on our golf course,he charges £18 for half an hour as we are all aware that is £36 per hour i find that extortionate for what he does,as i understand and please correct me if im wrong to be a PGA pro you have 2 be a 4 hp or less,it takes 3 years to train to get a pro licence to teach.hes 42 yrs of age so will never be a pro even though he plays off scratch.he has our course record of 58,par 65,however in the pro am shot 75 the worst pro on the day,he said nerves got the better of him.The one and only lesson i had with him was more talking than teaching a waste of money.my question is why do we call these people pros and pay them silly money when basically all they are,are good players who never made it.

There are many excellent teaching pros who can't play competitively, and to make enough money to live on as a tour player, you need to very good. If a pro has a family to support I woulsd assume he would be more secure with a regular teaching/pro shop income. Regular hours, staying at home and not living out of a suitcase with all the pressures of making cuts and keeping their cards.
If you are not happy with the way your pro teaches, go elsewhere.
Incidentally, what has his age got to do with it?

Sorry no he isnt a pga pro just the club pro,but i mean why do we call these people pros when basically they are good players that never made it,but charge silly amounts of money.Twire please respond it all adds to the debate

Okay, still confused. What is "just a club pro"???

If you are handing your money over to a guy with no teaching qualifications and know that he is only a half decent amateur......well, let's figure out who the mug is in this scenario??

SLUGGER as you can see it looks like being another post that creates a lot of interest and already it seams a bit of contraversy, but thats good there are so many boring ones.

PJ,

How is £36/hr extortionate ?

What do you think his overheads are ?

What does your employer use as their overhead rate ?

Butch Harmon or Bob Torrance probably couldn't knock it round in less than 85 but I'd still like a few golf lessons off them!

If your pro has all the relevant qualifications (its now regarded as degree level) then why not, he doesn't have to be a good golfer to be a good teacher. You say that you felt like you spent most of the lesson you had talking, obviously he is going to have to comunicate ideas to you but he cannot talk by himself if you know what I mean.

There are lots of different types of teacher like there are lots of different types of pupil, you just need to find one that suits you.
