Following on from Bob's thread re your short game I'd be interested to know what everyone's favourite approach shot distance is and also club - I'm talking 2nd shot on an average Par 4 or simply the distance and club you're really comfortable with (putter and 1ft not allowed ;)). I don't wish for this to be a 'my dads bigger than your dad' kind of thread, just curious to know whether the 7i, 8i, 9i or PW wins the day?

Personally, I love to have the PW in my hand for a 115ish approach but am also really at ease with my 8i for anything 135 to 145.

There are a few I enjoy...

80 YRDS - 58 degree pitch (My favourite)
155-160 - 8 iron

As long as I'm not between clubs then I'm pretty comfortable with most approach shots 180 YRDS and under.

I don't mind anything where I can make at least a 3/4 swing, the shorter the swing the bigger the problem for me. Love a full gap wedge from 100 yards :)

80 yard LW is good
But then the too 100 yard GW is good
So is the 115 yard PW
The 125 yard 9 iron takes some beating
As does the 140 yard 8 iron
The 150 yard 7 iron is the best
The 160 yard 6 iron is the best too
The 170 yard 5 iron isn't bad
The 180 yard 4 iron is great
The 200 yard 7w flies
The 215 yard 5w soars
The 230 yard 3w floats
The 250 yards driver is mythical creature that I see very rarely.........

Just out of interest, how are people deciding what distance a particular club goes when hitting into a green as opposed to a fairway? I don't think I have the accuracy to be thinking about getting it close to a pin, I generally aim for the middle of the green and don't pay too much attention to pin positions apart from noting if it is behind a bunker. I use my DMD to tell me the yardage to the front, hoping the ball will pitch on or around that distance then roll towards the middle. So if it is 100-105 to the front its a PW, my favourite is probably when it shows about 130 to the front which is a 7i for me and is probably my most consistent club in terms of strike and straightness. Not keen on clubs longer than the 7i as I sometimes hit a fade with them, don't mind shorter clubs but sometimes pull them every now and then.

DMD/pitchmark/ball gives me the exact information about how the conditions are effecting carry that day as well as roll out.
