Your Club's Invitation Fourball Betterball

My place is including food - and the cost can be justified when it is broken down. But whether or not it can be justified, £60 is too much for me - and clearly quite a few other members - which is a great pity.

Too much for me too, including food I would put an upper limit of something around £40 if they can't do a steak & ale pie and chips, followed by a couple of scoops of ice cream for £5 a head there's something wrong! (maybe I'm too used to Northern pricing!)

I don't necessarily need a meal and I don't want to be paying £60 when I can pay £17 any day of the week for him to play a round with me.

here's the difference - I think it's £30 weekend mornings for a member's guest, I say think because it's my bugbear that it's too expensive and I don't use it (in the same way as you are suggesting applies to the invitation).

so basically my £53 is significantly better relative value than your £60; but that doesn't make it absolute value at all - and I haven't actually invited said lady yet, partly because of it.

tbh we have a little of the same with club matches at home - by the time you have paid for food and hosted drinks it's getting a significant cost and this is putting some off. Away matches it's easy to consider the food cost as a very reasonable green fee and you normally end up with free food and drink! but I digress - sorry.

Ive got to agree that £60 is very steep and i wouldnt invite anybody either. The whole point in invitation is inviting a mate to have a round on you in my opinion so having your pants pulled down for £60 is like a kick in the teeth to the members really.

I think ours is about £15 without food and an optional carvery afterwards. Ours is always very well subscribed too from the two ive played in.

Ours is a FUN day £10 per 2 man team 4BBB held over sat/ sun , with a fully stocked bar,and bbq. [ no cash accepted members card only ] which is located behind the 8th tee , but can be accessed about 4 or 5 times , if you play your shots right . It is always fully attended. The Sunday was added because of the extra demand . A FUN DAY .
We also have a invitation texas scramble which has the same set up and is always over subscribed, but only held on the Saturday for some unknown reason, but another fun day to bring your pals .

Ours is brekkers, 9 hole comp in morning, lunch, 18 hole comp in afternoon, dinner, after dinner speaker, charity auction etc, and roll home mid to late evening. Will be £90 the pair. And will be full.

Unfortunately this year there's a clash and both me & my prospective guest will be in Scotland that weekend.

Mine is £70 per pair. Coffee & bacon rolls, 18 holes 4BBB, buffet lunch, 9 holes Texas Scramble, tea and prizes. The only reason I'm not taking it up is because I'm away, but I'm not unhappy with the day at that price, if I was here I'd be playing..

Notwithstanding what you get for your £70 I simply couldn't justify paying that amount (to my wife as well as myself) for a day golf at my own club.

I get a guest green fee for £30, my guest and I get royally fed all day for £20 each and we get prizes thrown in for free, I really don't see the issue with it.

Cost I'm afraid. Value for money is one thing - cost is another. Why make unaffordable what for many is one of a golf club's most fun days. You might well argue that if I can afford £1500 a year in subs then I can afford to pay to pay £70 a good day's golf etc with a buddy. Well the truth is I CAN'T really afford the subs. My wife takes one hell of a persuading that I stay a member. She just won't have me paying £70 to play at my own course - and as I live 3 mins from the club - she asks why do I need to eat at the club?

So it's simple really.

If my club provides that quality of day at a lesser price then they will effectively be subsidising those who play from the subs of those who don't, which is not on. And I cannot agree that £70 for what is provided is a unaffordable cost at a club with a £1500 annual sub. Each to their own I suppose.

But you can't tell me whether £60 for our Invitation 4BBB is affordable or not. For me it's not affordable. That I can 'afford' £1500 subs does not make it any more affordable - in fact it makes it LESS affordable. I do not think I should be being asked to pay £60 to play in the best comp of the year when you cam play with a buddy. Maybe my club thinks I'm loaded - I'm not.

Ours has just been "postponed" due to lack of interest (club are asking for 20 teams to make it worthwhile so 20 members from 700), I'm tempted to email the club and suggest halving the price when they decide on the date, currently it's £40/pair to include prizes and buffet lunch! Argument being that there's 2 possible reasons for lack of interest 1, none of the members have any friends or 2, the members think the price is too steep. The tee is booked for the afternoon so visitors without a member could get on for £25 after 2pm!

It's been a few years since I've been able to play in ours as it usually clashes with family holidays. However, it's always been a good day at a reasonable price for the event. No frills attached, if you want food you can order off the normal menu in the bar afterwards. Prizegiving is early part of the evening, although it's a fair while since that has had to be taken into account by us. It's a chance to showcase the club and have a good day out with one of your golfing mates. Simple. No frills needed. If you play well, you might even win a prize ;)

I didn't tell you anything of the sort; I said I didn't agree that a £70 Invitation Day was unaffordable at a club with a £1500 annual sub. And I also said each to their own. You're as entitled to think it unaffordable as I am to think it affordable. And I'm not loaded either.

Well we had 16 pairs playing today - that's shocking. We got something very wrong.

How many invitation days do you have at your club per year?

We have 3 and they're all usually filled. £12 a pair inc twos, Ive always thought this was the going rate for most inland clubs in the North West. if it was say £30 with a meal I think that they would struggle to fill it despite most eating in the clubhouse on the day anyway.

I think the club needs to consider why they are holding this event. If it's a way of making additional revenue on a one off basis then I would suggest they didn't bother.

I would suggest open competitions are to promote the club to non members and create a value added event for club members to compete against golfers from other clubs.

Regarding cost: visitors are only walking the grass. Food will be at a cost plus but profit will be dependant on whether the caterers are club employed or franchised. I would suggest the cost should be £10 green fee per golfer and food at cost plus £5. This would be around £40 per pair.

I agree - the committee really have to look at why we hold the event? Our only invitation of the year and 16 members out of say 500 invite a guest to play in the comp. I had a debate with the secretary about the cost. He justified it on value for money grounds. I just said - value for money is one thing - cost is quite another - and £60 is too expensive.
