Hello, asst editor here. Just wondered whether ther're any successful golfing punters out there. What's your biggest ever winning golf bet – who was it on and how frayed were your nerves?
Only asking because (for once), Golf Monthly's staff have had a bit of success on the Major Wagers section of the magazine sponsored by SkyBet. Our panel of six tipsters were given £25 each to play with on each of the four Majors – and we've walked away with an incredible £1,318.73 (I say "we" – I managed to draw a complete blank). All the cash is going to the Golf Foundation – full details in the November issue.
Any high rollers out there?

I have always had such a good record on the Majors, never winning a great deal but always walking away up - biggest win was on Cambo in the US Open... three-figues always gd!

This year has started well with £90 on Justin Rose e/w at the Masters but since then it's been a disaster!

Had a few goodies over the last 2 years.

Best year was 2005. Noticed Michael Campbell was 20-1 after the 3rd round of the US Open and ploughed £50 each way onto him hoping for 2nd place. Couldn't believe he won! Got £1350

Had already put just over £1000 on Tiger to win at St Andrews that year at 7/2 so I was in a no loss situation. Those 2 bets paid for a golf holiday for 2 to South Africa for 17 days! In spite of his huge lead I have to admit that I was as nervous as hell and didn't start celebrating until he had played the 17th though!

Also won about £600 on Tiger getting 2 majors last year and the same again for him winning the USPGA this year.

Best one was actually a top ten bet though. Got 40-1 on Andres Romero last year at Royal Liverpool. I had only seen him live at the Scottish Open the week before and thought he was a cracking player. Took a punt and came up trumps with an 8th place finish. Bought the whole pub drinks that night!!

In winter 06 I backed Chad Campbell in the US and Chris Di Marco in Dubai on the same week and they both won. Won over £300 on a £20 stake - back of the net!! In 2006 Masters they offered 7-1 on Mickelson, too good to miss and he came home too. Alas have backed losers ever since!

Not really, JohnWT. That was a one-off.

If you were to have a BIG bet on any golfer in the history of the game to win at a certain course, where would it be? Tiger at the Old Course was my conclusion.

I actually put the bet on in 4 lumps between February and June that year so it didn't feel quite so wreckless!

If I remember rightly, some far sighted commentator said at the Open in 1995 that you should put your money on Tiger winning when it was held at St. Andrews again in 2000. He was still amateur then but obviously showed that he had the game to win at the home of golf. I wonder what odds you would have got on him then? I remember seeing the Masters in 1995/96 or so and the Beeb listed the odds of various players...as far as I recall, Tiger was 1000 to 1, again as an amateur. In fact, I saw the list and wondered for a moment who this Woods guy was...it took me a sec to realise they were including amateurs.

I've had a good year this year. I had £20 e/w on Padraig for the Open at 20-1 returning £270

£10 on the Mexican to win the Women's British Open at 5-1, returning £60

£10 e/w on Ernie Els (third) in the USPGA at 20-1 returning £60.

Total return £390 in the space of four weekends. Not bad going.
