My friend is 20 years old and is the new Captain of our golf club. Having had a quick look on the Internet, is he the youngest Club Captain in the country?

Smacks of desperation to me, it should be an honour to be a captain of a golf club and should go to a long standing member, no one else want the job then?

Interesting debate could start here. Does he now therefore have overall total control/responsibility for the club? In my club yes he would, that's quite a bit of responsibility for a 20 year old, at my ripe old age I wouldn't be overjoyed with all that on my shoulders. I wish him all the best in his year of honour as Club Captain and hope it all goes well for him.

Good luck to him

Is it a private members club ? Got to be very daunting indeed

Could be a University Golf Club I suppose.

I know of someone years ago who was a club captain in his early 20's.
He was a bit like Steven Fry, very able and acted 20 years older than his real age.

if Bratty can be a captain then tbh age is the last thing a club has to worry about :D

There were so many things I could have said in this thread, but G1bbo has pretty much summed it up! ;)

I was 38 when I took over, and had only been there 6 years. Guessing in some forumers eyes I'd have been terrible, but hopefully none of the club's members have felt that.

Why would it smack of desperation? Next years captain is 26 and been a member for 16 years and on the committee for 5 years. This guy could have been a member for 12 years, former junior captain and on the committee for a few years.

Bearing in mind this is a proper golf club with plenty members.

This fella could be a long standing member, that we don't know of. I feel the captain should be a long ish standing member though and know the club inside out etc. It should be the type of person who has got stuck in at the club at the time they have been there and mixed all sorts of competitions and events. Not just some old guy who has been a member a while and its "his turn" that's a load of crap that I think is stupid.

I don't see age as a barrier if he knows the club well enough and most members know who he is etc.

a young captain might be a revelation, new ideas, charities etc.

Is the right answer.....

Royal Musselburgh GC is 100 members down this year............I ask you, fees due after xmas, end of january when the course is all winter greens, mats, tees...you name it. At a time of year when very few play and they wonder why they're down on numbers.

A young lad could work that out and what to do about it. In fact a 10 year old could work that out.

I maybe should have engaged brain before posting after a few large glass's of wine last night :D

I think the role of captain is obviously different at each club and its how much they can do and making the club go forward.

If the club is a proprietary club and the captain cant change anything and the owner does what they want then the Captain of the golf club could be any age.

I have seen lots of clubs that have adopted this and it works very well for them, My mate is captain of a 9 hole course and he has only been a member their for 3 years, He cant change anything and has no say whatsoever in how things are run and the reality is that he is captain of the A team and that's it but he is happy and the club is doing OK.

A members owned course is a different kettle of fish as the role changes massively to some captains that are just an addition to the committee during the 3 year stint as vice captain then captain then past captain and some clubs were the captain is almost the finance director for the year and controls everything and has a huge input to how the course is run and set up.

I am all forward a young captain that engages with members and hopefully recruits new members for the club as long as they bring something good to the role.

MY Club this year has its Youngest ever captain, i believe 30 or 31
Been a member since a wee lad, and been on committee couple years now also

His Mum is Ladies Captain this year Too

I don't think I could be doing with that!

I like this idea although in my own opinion and its not clear from the OP or the thread, I would like the guy to have at least been a member for a few years. That way he'll have a feel for what the problems may be, how the land lies in terms of the power of the role etc. If he's been on committees he may have an idea of money available and this may influence and plans he may have.

Fresh young blood doesn't need to be a bad thing although if he was a relative newcomer to the club, too much change may alienate the existing members. I know some clubs have the captain as more of a ceremonial post without any real power and so it would be interesting if the OP could fill the gaps in.
