On Saturday one of my mates went for a custom fitting as he wanted to change is irons after 6 years of service.

He tried 5 sets from 3 different brands, namely titleist, callaway and mizuno.

He bought the set he hit worst (together with another one) and "surprisingly" those were the clubs he had in mind from the beginning.

He was nailing the callaway straight and far with range balls but didn't like the cavities...

With the titleist he got he was pulling 50% of the shots and going way shorter.

His argument was that he wants to learn to use the titleist and that in the long term he will benefit from his choice.

(no blades involved here btw)

I have found myself reasoning the same way when I chose my putter. I was hitting better a kind of Odissey spaceship the size of my head but I strongly wanted a traditionally looking putter and went for it.

So if tomorrow you find out that you can hit a sportsdirect driver 300 yds straight every time, would you go for it?

No....... And for 2 reasons.

1. I'm a brand snob :D

2. I don't like the thought of any of my money going to Mike Ashley.

Seriously though. To me, the whole idea of a custom fit, be it a driver, irons, putter, whatever is you go with an open mind and buy the one that gives you the best figures and chance of improving your game.

Otherwise he might as well buy off the shelf gear over the interweb!

Could be wrong here but i think i remember some of the guys mentioning that the swing analysier tingamagig could be altered, to show you what the salesman wanted to show you , i have never been for CF so dont know, for me i would have to like the look of the club at address or i wouldnt buy it no mater how far the machien said i was hitting it ,

Mizuno CF dont sell, they arent allowed to, plus I took my old set with me and compared the stats, exactly the same for my 12 yr old clubs to the new 53's...........
so why the feck did I buy them.........they were shiny and mizuno's and new :o

Whilst I agree, the launch monitor is only part of the equasion. Ideally you want to get fit somewhere that allows you to see the flight of the ball, if it matches the numbers great, if not you still have the ball flight as a guide.

After that, it's down to you. If the OP's friend is hooking 50% of one brand and hitting another brand straight, why would you pick the clubs that don't improve your game?

Custom fit is a great way of applying some quantifiable parameters to club selection, but I do think you have to take account of the human factor too.

Confidence and just feeling good about the club you have in your hand will eventually come into play, even if it's weeks after your CF session. If you have niggling doubts about a brand, the looks or any other of these 'non performance' factors, I do think that will have a bearing.

In an ideal world we'd be rational and go with what the numbers tell us... but I know I'm not!

For example, I'm in the market for a driver. Mentally I've almost ruled out the R11 because I don't like the white and think it'll look tatty and dated in a couple of years. That is not a rational approach to my search, but the numbers would have to be markedly better than anything else to persaude me to go with the R11. :o
