Looking to take my work society to somewhere decent over the festive period. We do not want temporary greens or a boggy course, so sand based courses are a bonus!
We all reside in Yorkshire – Wakefield, York, Doncaster so are looking at somewhere round these areas, the closer to Wakefield the better really since its central. Definitely no further West than Leeds.
I am looking at no more than £30 per person for a round and there will be 12 of us. Just for the day. Some tricky criteria I know =]

Anybody got any ideas for this time of year? Looking forward to your suggestions.

Selby GC seems to stay fairly dry, as they've just had a new drainage system put in I believe.

There are loads of courses in Doncaster that you will most likely know of :D

Hickleton GC is nice if you don't mind a hilly course, and that always seems to be dry, and it's just west of Doncaster, so in a good location too. That would be my recommendation, as it's always interesting there.

My personal favourite is Wheatley GC in Doncaster, I love that course! It's something about the atmosphere, and my friend played there last week and said it was in great condition.

Bawtry GC, south of Doncaster can be OK, that's sandy, but I don't like the layout, too long, wide and boring. Good greens though.

I haven't played any courses in the Wakefield and Leeds area, with exception to Selby GC. A good geographical choice would be Mid Yorkshire GC, as it's smack-bang in the middle of all of you. I've never played it though :(

Hollins Hall springs to mind as it does pretty well in wet weather and don't remember playing it on temps. They do some decent deals over winter too. Guess with all the rain we've had the majority of courses will be drenched now.

Yes probably should have mentioned that we have exhausted all the Doncaster courses! Wheatley is a good shout though and so is Mid yorkshire. Played there and you are 100% correct. The location is ideal. Problem is its not the best in winter - as evident with only 8 holes open yesterday... Thanks for your input. Selby was what I was thinking of to begin with but heard its quite... exclusive.

I once played Hollins Hall when all other courses in the Harrogate area were closed due to excessive rain that week. We expected it to be a quagmire but it stood up really well. I would have no issues about playing it in December.

Ah well, my knowledge may be somewhat limited then, I rarely play out of Doncaster, maybe occasionally the Scunthorpe way. Like I said, my friend said that Wheatley was cracking a couple of weeks ago. It probably is my favourite course, I just didn't fancy the £800 joining fee :D

Selby can't be that exclusive, I was a member there, and I wipe my feet coming out of my house :D Jokes aside, I never found it to be exclusive. The pro's a cracking fellow, and in my brief stint there didn't have a problem with anybody. Nice course too, decent layout, fast greens, and it's difficult to lose balls, which was great for me! :D Down to personal opinions and experiences I suppose, but I liked it there, it was just too far away for me.

Get yourself to Holme Hall on the edge of Scunthorpe, 1hr away tops.

Drains really well and for 12 off you they might do a society deal.

This time of year I would try The Lincolnshire near Crowle (formerly Hirst Priory, but now an 18 hole course) stands up to the weather better than any other course in the area, cheap and a decent course with a nice variety of holes, water in play on a few and long if you play off the whites. You would definitely get on for less than £30/head.

Selby is a good shout, it will be open when 95% are closed due to heavy rain.
I moved from a course that closed with even a couple of days of heavy rain, never mind a couple of weeks worth. I couldn't be happier being at Selby. Great members, good staff and a decent enough pro. (prefer the pro at my old place though)
We have moved onto winter tees but on full greens aslong as it's not icy.

Add Wortley to that list too.... Tankersley is my favourite.... but don't think either will meet your no temps criteria

I still haven't played Wortley,it's on my list.
I've only played Tankersley a handful of times, nice course.
Yes it was on temps when I played it last Xmas.
Have you played Rotherham?

Not played Rotherham yet, but its one we keep meaning to.

It may not be the most exciting course, but i still enjoy a round on Sandhill too, it's been in great condition too.

Rotherham is a great course, not sure how it plays in winter though. It is tough to find a dry course in this part of the world, the Worksop courses are generally sand based and only a short hop down the A1 for you guys. College Pines is always on full tees and greens, as I would imagine is Worksop GC. Both really nice.

Rotherham is a bit expensive £40 midweek.
£50 wk end.
Yeah I like Sandhill,it's only 15mins from me so I play it often.

Looks like a meet could be arranged for next year some time with som many South Yorkshire golfers on the forum. Maybe meet somewhere central to us all? Maybe Wakefield/Huddersfield/Cleckheaton kind of area?

I'll be up for that.
Wait until the weather picks up tho.
I'm not keen on this wind & rain.
