Hi all curious Ito see if anyone has taken up yoga with the aim of improving there golf? I often see articles about it increasing flexibility etc and have seen a few people say the 30 day yoga challenge is really good. Im tempted to give it a go to stretch out my super tight hamstrings etc but curious to see if anyone has tried yoga and if the benefitted from it?

Ryan Giggs did and look what he managed at his age.?...
do it it will make you healthier if not a better golfer it must help you don't see many fat pros.
there are exceptions but not many.

I've been doing pilates for a few months now and I feel much better after playing golf than I did. I live in a village where about 10 of us do an hour work out, once a week, 5 of us are regular golfers ranging from about 60 to 70 years old and everyone says that their fitness has improved. I'm sure yoga would help in just the same way

I'm giving yoga a go. Have signed up for a four week beginners block starting tomorrow night. Don't know if it will help the golf but it can't hurt and should be good for me generally. My only concern is that it might be too dull for me, I quit pilates because I was bored with it.

I did hot yoga once a week, the affect was amazing. No back ache, no feeling stiff after games. Driving distance did increase, shoulder to hip rotation angle increased.
Can't find a yoga place here though, I do still do some of the positions as it maintains my back. Made me realise that stretching out the hamstrings and glutes in really important.

I went for 5 weeks but my rotor cuff shoulder played up. Also its quite ok to fart and not say excuse me

Is it not good for rotator cuff rehab? Never done it but im struggling with the same injury and been reading poor posture is a contributor to shoulder weakness.

If you have an iPad and (even better coupled with a smart TV) have a look at FitStar Yoga app (and FitStar).

The app has a few free routines to try out and it will show you how stiff and inflexible you really are 😱

Highly recommended. I use a few positions and stretches to help with an arthritic spine by building core strength and flexibility - I'm sure doing it properly would be a significant leap in physical capability. Mainly helps manage pain for me but I've picked up a few yards alongside a bit of gym work; not huge gains tbh but enough to be noticeable. A good friend of mine is a Sivananda Yogi and he's happiest, strongest bugger I know. The psychological benefits are good too, it's a really nice thing to do - I think I'm talking myself into doing more here...

I've just started classes again having had a long lay off. It's Ashtanga yoga which is more dynamic than many other forms (FD - might suit you - I too get restless when it's too slow)! I love all things fitness but not yoga and it's because it's tough without actually getting a buzz from a tough workout. My yoga teacher is amazing - she is so lithe and strong...

My wife is a yoga fan and showed me some stretches to work on hamstrings and lower back mostly. I used to have lower back pain after a round but didn't have it once all lasy year, it turns out it wasn't my back at all but shortened hamstrings that were doing the damage. I used to be very flexible (steady) in school but sitting at a desk since put paid to that. In fact my top half is too flexible I was told by a pro, I can rotate my shoulders way too far without getting resistance from my hips. Anyway few hammy streches a day and I never fear that back pain. Definately improves my quality of life and probably my golf long term. Do it.

I've downloaded the 30 day challenge chart, I'll give it a go in my hotel room tonight. I've suffered from lower back pain since my late teens (made a world class save when I was a keeper but landed funny :D).
Better have 999 ready on speed dial though

I'm no expert but maybe you're better off doing that under the supervision of a professional (or at least someone who yogas a lot (not a verb))? I know some folk will say "it's just stretches" but if you're carrying an old knock you could do yourself more harm than good. Just an opinion! The will to do it is the first step

This ^.
A decent yoga teacher will ask about any injuires problems before a class and work around any issues.
They'll also go round the class and check all the postures are done correctly.

Been doing yoga for years and has helped keep me going and in some ways hindered me as I'm now too flexible and over rotate.

I can 100% say this is one of the best things I ever started! I had terrible posture and bad back (only 25 at time) - basically from being 6 foot 2 mixed type of work I did at the time.
I started this in Cyprus May 2015 and I kept it up - my posture has improved massively, my flexibility increased and my bad back has gone - So I can fully put everything into my swing. My handicap at starting was 13 I'm now at 9. I don't put all my improvement down to it - but it certainly contributed.
Don't just do all yoga - mix it in with your current work out routine and golf practice.

Ensure you go to a class which is a certified wheel of yoga instructor.

I've never looked back since starting! Brilliant! I feel it also helps your mental game as well!

I went through a TPI assessment and the next steps are an exercise programme with pretty much involves a number of yoga/pilates stretches to help with flexibility. It's worth going through it to highlight where your weaknesses are. I had pretty much all weaknesses haha

It helped the first two weeks, pain free but the pain came back worse for me, plus i realised i had other problems. I struggle to raise my hands for even a short time

Have you tried legs straight up the wall and arse as close to the skirting as you can get it.
This is the best exercise I have tried for lower back pain.
