With more and more Golfers taking up fitness plans to help their game and reduce injuries I wondered about Yoga.

Why? Well it stretches muscles making them more elastic and stronger, makes joints more flexible and helps posture. It is also cheap and does not require a gym full of equipment.

Since all the above benefits are important in Golf, surely a Yoga can help?

I think it can. It has certainly made me feel better if nothing else.

What do you fellow members think? All answers welcome, agree, disagree or just down right funny. Would like to hear from you all. :)

been thinking about it myself recently. How do you go about it? Did you join a class, use a wii or just read about it and do it in the house?

Keeping with the same chain of thought.

Wouldn't Pilates be better suited to Golf??

Extract from A.N.Other site:

Pilates is a body conditioning routine that helps to not only build flexibility, but also strength, endurance, and coordination in the legs, abdominals, arms and back.

Everything a golfist needs :D

Yoga won't revolutionise golf half as much as the bacon sandwich has.

Abs (seewhat I did there?) solutely Murph, I have yet to get to the 10th hole and wish I could do some more yoga.

I sense a big sell coming soon! :D

Ian, do you know anywhere I could find out more? I'm really looking for a "revolutionary 6-week golf fitness programme" :p

Seriously though, there aren't many sports where better flexibility and conditioning wouldn't help. And particularly in prolonging the playing career.

I also do Yoga and have found that it helps me to stay relexed on the course.....well it's either the Yoga or the 4 joints that I smoke during the round :D

Never seen the fasciantion with yoga or pilates and always thought of it as a bit hippy. I know a guy who did Tai Chi and swore blind it helped his game so maybe there is something in it. I'm definitely not as supple as I was as a callow youth and so apart from lorryloads of seven sea supplements may have to look at alternative ways to keeping this athletic frame in golfing order

Have friend who is a personal trainer. He gave me a Golf specific training plan and it was all built around rotation and flexibility.

Its sat in my drawer for teh last year....and I've pinged my back twice this season so far

Och well....that's what the firm's medical insurance is for I suppose - free physio !!

A few of the members at my place have started doing Pilates classes with one of our lady members who runs sessions, and say it's really helped.

Must admit to being tempted to start this myself.

Is she a looker?
You cynic, Homer! ;)

She's attractive enough, but is over 45 and not so attractive that men would happily spend time and money at her Pilates class compared to playing golf, practicing, watching TV, etc.

yoga probably wont do any harm, but as is with most sport you have to train the specific muscles that you use in your sport
do you actiually know if yoga is helping witht eh muscles that you use for golf or could it really be hindering you??

is it really fit for the purpose that you want it to do ,if not your wasting your time, you'd be aswell sitting on the couch watching tv

i train a little mma/BJJ now and again i found that the BJJ is great for core strengh and flexabilty im 6'1 14st and pretty flexible get my feet just behind my head haha,

Typical  I can never find my enigma machine whenever I need it
