Golf World this month publishes it's Top 100 courses in England. Put together by 'the most distinguished panel in the game' it is yet another complete farce.

Here are a few examples of the courses that I've played on the list:

Parkstone 89th v Ferndown 28th

Remedy Oak 40th v Bearwood Lakes 76th

Fulford 65th v Hindhead 74th

The Berkshire Blue 23rd v St Georges Hill 27th

Perranporth 62nd v Saunton West 86th

And a few courses in the 'Next 50' include

Bude, Hawkstone Park, Sherborne, The Players and Weston Super Mare.

I'd love to know who is on this 'distinguished panel' and read their golfing CV's

Again the thing with these lists is that it is peoples opinions just like for example top 100 rock drummers list that was in Q magazine some may say Keith Moon others may say Neil Peart then somebody younger who doesn't even know them might say Travis Barker. It really is down to personal choice. I personally do not like Links Golf courses so would not put them in my list but others love them.

Now that I have picked myself up off the floor from laughing!

Perranporth 62nd! Really? Have they every played it?

Bude in the top 150 is another one that had me laughing like a drain!

These things are designed to provoke discussion and I'm sure they deliberately put some trange choices in to do just that. I tend to take all of these including the GM one with a pinch of salt. It is all subjective and I've played courses that I have liked that my partners rate as a goat track.

So yoru're saying that courses are only put in there to provoke discussion and not actually on some form of ranking, so actually the list actually pointless......?

Not completely pointless but taking into account everyone's opinions being different you simply cannot produce a difinitive Top 100 of Golf courses

As I said earlier whenever a top 100 list, top 50, top 10 whatever is based purely on opinion then there will always be disagreements. I am not a fan of Links courses so may not put any in my top 100 where some people love them and may put all links courses in. There is no way that everybody will be happy with what is put together

Parkstone 89th v Ferndown 28th - possibly correct but not that much difference

Remedy Oak 40th v Bearwood Lakes 76th - correct

Fulford 65th v Hindhead 74th - correct based on all 18 holes

The Berkshire Blue 23rd v St Georges Hill 27th - essentially the same - correct

Perranporth 62nd v Saunton West 86th - couldn't comment but Saunton West far behind East is correct

And a few courses in the 'Next 50' include

Bude, Hawkstone Park, Sherborne, The Players and Weston Super Mare - I would actually say this was a joke.......
