Okay, so it's not really a newsworthy post, but I managed my first top 10 in a comp on Saturday. Managed to get 37pts (with 2 blobs) putting me 9th, with my previous best being 26 pts in competition.

Soon, I shall take over the world! MWAHAHAHA!..... ahem... :o

Not bad, well played Fourputt.

How many people enter the comps your playing in?

I did quite well last year a won a few things, but most of our comps are fairly small fields, sometimes we dont even have the 2 divisions. Just wondering how many you huys compete against?

This was the final round of a winter series, so there were a fair few. About 80, I think. There were 8 prizes and we do prizes for the top 10% of the field. (Just missed out this time, but they will be mine, oh yes, they will be MINE!)

There are no divisions at our club in the winter either, so it was the full field. I am quite chuffed, and hoping it is finally a sign of some improvement!

Thats good news. Keep it going but don't put too much pressure on yourself next time out and just relax and let it flow. World domination may take a few weeks!

I won't. To be honest, I think what helped was that it was the final round of a series and I was in no chance whatsoever of even coming close for the series score. I think I was only carrying forward 24 pts or something, whilst there was a good few in the low 40s. I just went out to have fun and almost thought of it as a practice round. When I came off The Hill (on to our 14th) with 29 pts and started thinking about hitting 39 or 40, I promptly blobbed the next hole which is one of our easiest. Had to get a grip of myself at that point and relax.

I'm going to try and keep it chilled this morning too. Keep the swing nice and smooth and easy and not try and outdrive anyone. Play my own game and remember that for me, it's a par 98 course! :D

Ahem....

Not quite the follow up I had hoped for!

Only 33 pts today, but not to worry, it was at least reasonably respectable, should still be in our Order of Merit points (top 20 plus ties).

Has anyone else noticed that if you play with someone who is having a shocker, it can almost be catching!

Most definitely!

I played with a 28'er years ago. More like 128'er in reality. I was off 8 at the time and I think I shot 99 on a par 68. Just lost the will to live writing down 10's and 11's on almost every hole for this guy......

I know the feeling and I think I inflicted my dodgy game on HTL this morning. We are in a pair event next week, combined stableford scores (both scores per hole count) off 3/4 handicap. Not sure we'd have been in the running today although our combined front nine would have been healthy and he had a reasonable back nine. I didn't!

Heh, and on the opposite note, I played with a 4 handicapper today, who took one look at my swing at the 4th tee, made one suggestion, and I was striking the ball better than I have since I started playing. My sliced drives were eradicated almost instantly and my irons were MUCH straighter. I must have had about 8 or 9 GIR today. Unfortunately, I three putted all of them, but tee to green I was playing more like a 18 handicapper than a 28 handicapper.

Even with all the 3 putts (11 of them, no less!) I still played only a couple over handicap and that was with a 5 off the tee on the second leaving me with a ten on the card.

I reckon the putting needs to be addressed sharpish, there's potential to knock half a dozen shots off the handicap without too much hardship. Might even get off my butt and shell out for a putting lesson.
