Looking at ping webfit

Shoving info in their web fitting and am told to use stiff to x stiff shaft

i am hitting 8 iron round about 150 meters and was wondering if anybody else agrees with this

I know that it custom fitting will get me the ultimate result, but i would like to know if anybody else is hitting same yardage, and has same flex

Anyway other story...

i was on driving range in colchester 2day and to be honest was struggeling to reach 150yards with 7 iron

now is it me or do the driving range balls differ that much distance wise?!?

Hi there,
150 metres sounds a bit strong for an 8 iron....is this your average distance or is it a 2 in 10 shots to 150....hit 5 shots with the iron and add the total distances together and divide it by 5 this should be a little more accurate...everything comes into play though...Temp Rain Wind......as well as range balls....My own theory on these is that there never a true measure of how far you can hit a ball as they have the living daylights pounded out of them day in day out.......How can they be accurate.....

I have a number of issues here.

1) I would never take the information input directly into a website as an accurate indication of the shaft specification. Instead I'd be asking my pro, going to a Ping (if they are the clubs you want) demo day or arranging a C/F fitting at their HQ in Lincolnshire.

2) The distance you hit is unique to you and your swing. I am a fairly short hitter (144 average with a 7 iron) but have a very quick swing. Others may have a long and short swing and hit their 7 iron 160. Its what you do that counts.

3) There have been some story's on here of people being custom fitted and seeing an initial improvement and then changing their swing as a result of lessons or just reaching a natural plateau and have switched back to off the shelf models and found them better to hit. I think C/F is a benefit to many people particularly to ensure you get not only the correct shaft to work for you but to ensure that the loft and lie is ideally set for your height.

On your other point, range balls by design will go approximately 15-20% shorter than normal balls and weather conditions such as the cold will have a further adverse effect on those distances.

Why people go to ranges and get so hung up about having to hit a 7 iron 150 yards because that is how far the marker shows is beyond me. You'd be far better off ignoring any yardage markers out there and focus on making smooth, compact and repeatable swings that hit the ball straight everytime.

Very few people swing fast enough to need x flex shafts, and if you are coming up as borderline x, then go stiff.

As an aside, X flex shafts have pretty much a zero sell on, as the market for 2nd hand x flex is minute.

Hi,
I'd hit the 8 iron about the same as that and i use the project x 6.0 shafts which i think are between stiff and extra stiff the pro wanted me to the 6.5 or 7 but i felt more comfortable with the 6.0.

I'm looking at Ping irons too and have tried some demo clubs on the range and have done the webfit. Agree with the posts above, the webfit is only a guide and no substitute for a professional, experienced eye.

Yes, range balls don't go as far, principally because if they were the same as the balls we play with on the course then they would all disappear within a fortnight! However, when hitting irons on a range forget distance. You should be picking a specific target (maybe a flag?) and trying to get close to it. It is the flight and accuracy of an iron shot that counts not the distance with any particular club.
