Yardage markers

I have a question about yardage markers.

Playing yesterday we noticed that the marker at the tee which gives the yardage to the green was sometimes up to 20-30 yards behind the coloured 'stumps' where you actually tee off. So my question is, is the yardage shown on the marker the yardage from the marker or from where you tee off?

Obviously 20 yards could make a big difference with club selection etc.

On a similar note I played a course recently that didn't have the usual 150 markers. Instead they had a certain type of tree planted on either side of the fairway that designated 150 yards to the green. Now these trees were of the very wide fern variety so not particularly accurate. Why not just have markers?

It is indeed up to you to calculate the difference between the distance point - the fixed point from which the length of the hole was measured - and the tee markers which may be placed in different positions on different days. That being said, the tee marker should not be 20 - 30 yards away from the distance point. CONGU regulations state a normal maximum of 10 yards in front of or behind it.

NB Yardage marker would usually, as Airlie andy has done, refer to the stakes at the side of a fairway indicating the distance to the front or middle of the green.

there's a little scope for confusion here :)

1. there will be movable tee blocks/tee markers indicating the actual teeing ground in play on a hole.
2. there should be fixed marks, normally small coloured plates inset in one side of the teeing area and these should match to the distances on the card for those tees on that hole - these are the measured marks for the course.
3. you may have larger markers indicating each of these, and showing the distance on them, or you may have a single hole plate listing all the hole distances from these plates - and this might be at the back or as you approach the tee.

normal procedure would be to find No 2, pace off the distance to No 1 and calculate the distance to go with reference to the card and the pin position......or look at your DMD standing at the markers looking at the green! :)

That's only a 'should normally' these days. It used to be a 'must'. I suspect the 'should normally' is widely breached!

Max of 100 yards overall difference from Measured still applies.
