Hypothetically...

Your current gaps between 3w, hybrid and longest iron are 25yd - 15yd.

You find a 3w that goes 10yds further than your current one. Do you...

a) Buy it and live with the 35yd gap to hybrid
b) Buy it and rearrange your other clubs to minimize the gaps
c) Leave it alone

10 yards? Is dispersion comparable? Assuming it is, screw it, buy it! Everyone knows it's how far that counts... by the way what 3w is it?

Hypothetically......how far behind your driver will this 3 wood be?

On the basis of same dispersion and similar flight.

Then I would look at each kind of hole you play:-

On Par 3s, I assume the new 3 woods extra 10 yards is irrelevant, as you hit the ball a fair distance, so would be able to reach all par 3s already.

Would have thought on par 4s the extra 10 yards is neither here or there, whether you take it off the tee or fairways, so again fairly irrelevant.

On par 5s assuming you don't need the extra yardage to hit a par 5 on your home course in two, I would leave it.

I would much rather have suitable distances between clubs, as any club apart from driver is really about how far it goes to me, so it is all pointing to leave it.

I wasn't joking when I said it was hypothetical :)

See above but: If the driver doesn't increase they'd be pretty similar for carry, but the driver runs out 20yds further.

Edit: Actually, for this question assume I get an extra 10 yards on my driver too.
Can you live with the big gap to hybrid, or upgrade the hybrid and live with the big gap to longest iron, or etc etc.

I'm not sure you need to change anything else.

You are now just 10 yards further with a 3 wood off the tee and can reach greens 10 yards further away than before.

I am a short hitter even by forum standards and so for me, distance at the top end is still secondary to getting it play. If I needed to play with distances I'd grip up and down a driver or three wood. In my mind, the distances especially in the irons, and in particular the mid and short irons are where I really want my yardage so to be accurate, or as much as they can be with my swing.

Buy it and live with the gap. A decent travelling three wood is a great addition for the distance vs accuracy conundrum so get it and rely on it plenty. I've wasted loads of time (and ££) fiddling with hybrids, 3w's, long irons and it's largely nonsense. Find something reliable what puts you in position and you'll be fine. Better off spending time with your wedges from my experience...

I have been thinking about replacing my wedges and have been considering going for a 46 / 50 / 54 split.

I have Ping Glide wedges at the moment, but never been 100% on them. Losing a lot of shots from 100 yards in and I have been working hard to try and improve my short game, but never had 100% confidence with the feel the Glides give me.

Id get some vokeys completely changed my game

The Vokey's were what I have been taking a look at, need to go and try them out and perhaps give a few other wedges a go while I am at it.

3 wood is max distance so therefore I would get the one I could hit the furthest whilst still maintaining a good level of strike and go from there all things being equal. Think of the amount of greens it will bring in range that weren't previously
