My sons 32" LCD tv has finally died today and we have decided to get a basic LCD monitor as he has a gaming headset and doesnt need a TV

We are thinking of 22" approx as it will sit on his desk in his bedroom instead of wall mount

Has anybody tried a basic VGA connection, is it still HD 1080 ??

Or do we need the HDMI newer monitors available

Any tips of wisdom ?

Quality is lost with the VGA cable, I'd go hdmi if you could. Deepening on the game he plays and whether he plays the, intense.y online I personally would say 22 is nowhere near big enough for something like cll of duty especially if you aren't getting HD clarity.

Agree with this, a 10 inch jump will be a bit of a jolt for him, perhaps consider something like a 27inch?

A cheap 27" PC monitor is about the minimum you would need, usually cost 200+

Don't pay for a mid range or above monitor, consoles do not take advantage like PCs do.

Dont forget he will be sitting closer as it will sit on his desk, the 32" old tv was wall mounted about 2m away from sitting position

So i guess a HDMI Monitor is the sensible approach instead of VGA

Please note this is for playing COD etc

My 23 inch gaming monitor is perfect size when playing on my PC, could maybe have got 24 but I wanted gaming specs over massive size.

Something around 27" nice an cheap will allow him to sit back and enjoy, usually with PC gaming you go closer to the screen, console gaming you lean back and play with your paddle.

Conversely to the above advice, a smaller LCD monitor is actually better if playing near the screen.

Also VGA loses v little quality and actually removes some post processing with improves response times on monitor. Persoanlly I use a 24" Iiyama with 2ms response via VGA (prolite 2409 HDS about 130 off amazon).

I agree with this, saying the same thing I wanted to but slightly better put. 23/24 for close action, bigger needed if you are sitting back with a console controller in your hand.

Did not know that about VGA, interesting to know as my gaming monitor as either HDMI or VGA input, might consider trying the VGA to see how it improves my gaming experience.

It will add at least 0.01 to you K/D!

The larger the screen the more surface area for your eyes to scan surely?

Yes it's done in milliseconds but you can get killed in less than a second so it could make a difference.

You killing machine!

If they only took out lag compensation I might enjoy COD.

As soon as I see the countdown start at 13 I give up.

Actually on CSS I usually could get a positive KD, most of the time. That was over a year ago now, when I had a fantastic huge desk, brilliant chair and all the kit I needed.

Not I have a weeny desk, crappy chair and no internet :(

Was just over 1 on all CODs bar this one.

Terrible spawns then "revenge" spawning on top, certain overpowered weapons (how does a sniper rifle beat a shotgun at 5 feet?) and lag compensation all add up to a bit of a mess.

I still enjoy playing it but it's no COD4.

Tried CSS at the weekend just can't get on with it.
