I know the are people on here who like gaming, but I am clueless! My sons birthday is approaching and he wants an XBox as all his mates play them - but looking at the choices the Xbox1 is double the price of the 360.

What are the advantages of the 1 to make it so much more expensive than the 360, is it worth the money??

Any experiences or opinions welcome, thanks in advance.

XBox360 is nigh on 10 years old, and therefore so is the tech. Don't get me wrong, the 360 is still good and the graphics are great... but, the One has a much faster processor and GPU and the graphics are fantastic. I have also found that the online experience is better, I suffer less lag and drop-out than I still do with my old 360.

Like all tech, it comea down to age. I didnt mind paying £450 for the One as I had 8 good years service from my 360.

Find out what his mates have as the games don't work on both consoles so he couldn't play online with them, which I imagine is half the point of getting it. Plus 360 games don't work on xbone

And the Xbox one today is way more than just a games machine. Can use it as a media centre, loads of options. But yeh, find out what his mates have. Seen the xbox1 dropped to about 300 now so may finally upgrade soon!!

Thanks for the replies guys. He's not a full-on gamer as such, but enjoys playing things like Halo and Minecraft when he goes to his friends. Just don't want to get something that he won't use (or appreciate) the full functionality. His friends have 360's but he's starting secondary school in Sept so will no doubt meet a lot more people who game. Think the 1 would be better in the long term as I had no idea the 360 was 10 years old so guess the tech will become unsupported in time?

If you want longevity then the Xbox One is the only option, as mentioned the 360 is a great piece of kit however is getting long in the tooth now and is outdated against what is available. I have both and whilst I wasn't sure I'd make use of everything the One can do I wouldn't be without it now.

You can pick up an Xbox 360 really, really cheaply with a tonne of games (Try 'GAME' pre-used consoles with 6 months warranty). Might be the way to go until Xmas when he might want to upgrade.

If all his friends has 360's and he want to play online with them then you should get a 360. Get one second hand and it shouldn't cost much at all. May need to look at getting a XB1 when his friends start changing but chances are they'll be cheaper by then and if you get the 360 at the right price the combined cost of both shouldn't be much more than an XB1 is now.

Agree that getting what his friends have is sensible BUT ask your son what games he wants to be playing in the next year. All the kids will be wanting to upgrade in this coming year.

Minecraft is better on the Xbox One. Halo is only being continued on Xbox One.

And I don't think he'll feel hard done by if he has a better console than his mates for a while.

I imagine he'll want a Xbox One, as it's the latest version of the console. Also, if he wants to play any of the newly released games, like the new PGA Tour game for example, he'll only be able to play them on the new Xbox. I'm still happy with my 360, but if it was to die, I'd be upgrading to an Xbox One.
