X out balls

HAve seen a few places offering cheap deals on 'x-out' balls from various manufacturers.

Anybody ever used any 'x out' balls from any manufacturer, are they virtually the same as the usual model of the same brand?

I always understood X-outs to be 2nds from the production line. A discolouration of the cover or print. I also got told years ago (rightly or wrongly and am quite prepared to be corrected) tht X-outs can't be used in competition and they don't conform. Ok for practice etc...

I know guys that have used X-outs. Trouble is they aren't legal (to my knowledge) for comps and I tend not to fill my bag with balls, so it'd be sods law I'd dip in to the pocket half way through a medal and discover only X-outs!

Unless you're playing in elete level amatuer events then there will not be a list of conforming balls,
ie In the note to Rule 5-1, it states that "The Committee may require, in the conditions of a competition (Rule 33-1), that the ball the player uses must be named on the current List of Conforming Golf Balls issued by The R&A".

So you can use anything as long as it's round, correct size and weight. So X-outs would be OK for a club medal.

As a hard up junior I use to use them all the time. Back in the 80's I can remember Titleist regularly selling boxes of them but you don't seem to see them as much now. THey seem to have been superceded by lake balls and refurbs where I wouldn't be confident of the quality (we've spoken about this before I see to recall). However as said refurbs were basically factory rejects so the quality of the ball was guaranteed it was just flaws in the paintwork or stamping of the company name. If you can get them I say use them.

There is a reference &link to the right rule link in the DGUK sale item for Titleist PTS roll X-Outs. Essentially they will be illigal for competiton unless the commitee has decided otherwise. I really don't think most clubs would at this time of year have an issue with them, but always best to check. Nothing wrong with you using them for general play. Redmike.

I'm sure you are right (as you always are) but at 2 of my last 4 clubs X-outs have been banned. Maybe they shouldn't have been?

as X-outs they are automatically non-conforming and it's much easier for clubs to require conforming balls.

As someone posted, DG are selling PTS roll X outs for a tenner - might give them a go to use over the winter in friendly games.

I must say I was thinking exactly the same thing when I was reading an e-mail from Direct golf before even logging onto the forum this evening
