I came back from a injury lay off from golf after 18months(was playing off 16, handicap lapsed) and joined a new course.

First 3 rounds played when back, were my handicap cards as I just wanted to get back into sat medals. As you can imagine they were not my finest rounds and I was given a 28 handicap.

Now I have for first time got fitted clubs, playing 2-3 times a week for last 4 months and my handicap is a running joke with friends and work. I am now regulary shooting in a range of 83-89 on my Par71 course( bounce games ).

Do I just continue and handicap will come down in course, or should I voice concerns that I think handicap is wrong?

Write to the commitee, ask for a cut and hope you have an annual handicap review. We do, and they will always cut people who ask. Much harder to get shots back really.

Are you playing in competitions or just friendly games? If you're playing in Stableford/stroke competitions and scoring in the mid 80s off 28, your handicap would soon come down in leaps and bounds, I would have thought.

A friend of mine had the opposite problem - he played off 10 and then had to take a year off for knee surgery. When he got back to golf, he was given the same handicap he'd had before and obviously couldn't play to it. The club said they couldn't up it.

I know the rule over here in Ireland is no matter how long ur lay off is you start back at the handicap you left off at. I'd of thought you would of been given ur old 16 back and work up or down.

Don't be daft.....

You were quite good, and now you are struggling. I am the same (used to knock it round in single figures, now about 12-14 over); this is after 5 years off or so.
Your club won't have made a mistake and if you win a few comps, it'll soon come tumbling down. I'd say it's just your pride that's dented, which I totally understand.

Asking for a cut might get you a bit lower if there is good cause, or you could politely mention to the h'cap secretary that you don't want to bandit a few medal wins. Just remember you'll get wickedly cut off 28 if you start playing under 20 or so, and winning a few things will keep you enthusiastic.

Leave it well alone, go make a name for yourself!!!

Thanks guys for your replies.

Handicap has been cut to 25 since I came back. Not exactly leaps and bounds.

Have won two medals out of the 6 I have played and I kind of felt bad hence the query.

In both medals I won I had some stupid holes (ie. a 7 on a par 3 and a 9 on a par 5 for example!) Winning score was net 67 & 66 respectively.

Bounce games I am now shooting back to closer my old handicap. Medals with a bit of pressure and the added difficulty I am still making mistakes on 3-4 holes that cost me.

Will see how the winter goes and if I really feel handicap is way out I will have a word with the secretary.

Thanks for your input.
