Wrist Injury

Hi all,

I've had a problem with my wrist for the past few months, it started off just when I was using my driver but has recently crept into most full swing shots with any club and it's driving me mad.

It's really hard to describe the issue but I'll do my best. As I get to the end of my backswing my right wrist has some sort of niggle or like it's tight or locks up slightly, it completely ruins the shot when this happens and is now happening on 80%-90% of shots.

There is no pain in the wrist at all and it just feels like I'm wearing an elastic band on my wrist all the time, sometimes tighter and sometimes barely noticeable.

Anyone ever experienced this before and may know what it is???

I have been the doctors and was literally in there a minute, enough time to prescribe me anti inflammatory tablets and tell me to stop playing golf for 4 weeks:(

I can't find any information about this injury online as right now I have no idea what it is or may be, any help would be appreciated.

welcome

depends exactly where the tension feeling in the wrist hand is

from medical point of view best answer would be to route out a special sports physio

after the medically enforced lay off would book a lesson with a PGA as my guess would be the issue most likely been brought on first off by the grip being employed on the handle

often times seen issues similar to this arise due to a misconception of how the hands/wrists should set and release during a golf swing and largely because the handle of the club is being held too far 'up' in the top of the palms (as opposed to laying more at the bottom of the palms and in the fingers which allows a natural 'set' and movement

a grip of that kinda orientation makes it a good deal difficult to 'set' the hands/wrists as they should be so then this kinda grip causes the wrists to be largely immobile and doesn't make a 'natural' release of the club through impact, and the 'centripetal' and 'centrifugal' forces and 'torques' put ways to much stress on the hands/wrists that plus their movement through impact ends up damaging the hands/wrists some

Welcome along. Personally I'd be going back to the doctor and insisting on further investigation as it doesn't sound right even without any pain

Thanks for the reply guys.

I actually changed my grip a couple of weeks back to what you may call the standard proven golfers grip, had my clubs fitted a week ago and the pro was happy with my swing and grip. Saying that I have been playing with an awful grip for such a long time now and at the age of 38 injuries seem to happen more frequent than ever.

I've been looking at local sport physios so maybe they are the next port of call, having had back injuries in the past I'm well aware of how long it takes before the doctor will send you to see a specialist and then you're on a waiting list for at least 5 weeks! Us golfers are an impatient bunch and a couple of days away from golf has me agitated!!

Sorry if you don't like this, but going on a golf forum to ask about injuries is stupid.

Go to the Doctor, take his /her advice, and suck it up.

My bad, I thought going to a golf forum asking for advice on what could potentially be a golf related injury would be a good idea. Who knows, there may be others out there that may have had the same issue.

Don't worry, you'll get used to Three. If you don't share his opinion it's usually because you're stupid, or you're just asking a stupid question. (In his opinion)

Yup it is a good idea, it could be related to an RSI injury, one in which the same procedure ( swinging a club ) could be the cause. Especially if you don't get it any other time. If it is and a physio or other professional will or will not confirm that. Then treatment which could involve a visit to you pro to alter how you get to the top of your swing.

re wrist/ hand injuries, my left hand has been playing up since I smacked a root about 5-6 weeks ago. It is slowly getting better. Unfortunately rest is your bestest friend. Welcome to the fruitcake shop.

Funny enough I use Taylormade RSI irons :D

I'm going to have a few weeks to a month break before I go the range just to hit a few shot to see how it goes, but I'm not going to play on until it's fully healed or I have some professional help getting it treated. I'm probably being optimistic as I know tendons and muscles take a while to heal.

I'll probably end up seeing a sports physio to just see if they can confirm what exactly it is, at least then I'll know what the right treatment is.
