HID treated me to lunch at an old, quite ramshackle pub near Whitstable today. It's the sort of place you'd go to drink and play darts - except it's got one Michelin star!

I went for something Ive never eaten before as my main course and tried Thornback ray - - wow was that nice, even with a heavyish cold it tasted so good! We asked about booking for a future anniversary and a Saturday means a summer booking and a weekday would be mid spring before they could fit us in!

What have you tried at a restaurant for the first time and loved?

We have a pub near the golf course. Typical old fashioned looking pub from the outside and tucked away well off the beaten track. However their menu is exquisite home cooked food from an a la carte to simple bar snacks like calamari rings and chips

It may not be a michelin star restaurant but it's always fully booked for Sunday lunch and every evening in the summer

If you are talking of the pub right on the seafront some great tuck served there... Saw Greg whatisname from masterchef when we were last in there... As for something I wasn't sure about, when ordering for first time, it has to be snails... Have them quite regularly now great when cooked in pastis..

I'm talking about The Sportsman at Seasalter. I saw Greg Wallace when I was in the Pearson Arms in Whitstable once

Had mango and fresh chilli creme with a delicious prawn fishcake yesterday evening with Mrs Hogan. Never had the mango and chilli creme before - lovely with the fishcake.

We dined at a very excellent bistro restaurant that I can thoroughly recommend for when you are next in Plymouth. Not been to Plymouth for near 40yrs and as we were going to be there yesterday we asked a yachting friend from thereabouts for a recommendation - Jolly Jacks was his suggestion. Spot on Rob - very nice indeed, lovely food, great atmosphere, reasonably priced, very friendly staff and had a nice chat with one of the owners - Sally.

I went to Rick Steins cafe in Padstow about 3-4 yrs ago. Set 3 course menu for about £20 ish. Hugely recommended, great food, relaxed setting. He has a restaurant there as well but that is far more expensive and a bit formal, according to my wealthier relatives who went there. Anyway, I had salt and pepper prawns for the first time, yes I know they are a staple on Chinese menus but I had never had them before. Heavenly. Absolutely lovely.

Had Sunday lunch last weekend at a little place in Newcastle called Cosy Dove, mmm delicious, well worth a visit for the local chaps, very reasonable as well.
Next on the list is The Feathers in Hedley On The Hill which is not far from where I live, it's quite expensive though so I'll need to re-mortgage before I can afford to eat there.
