I had a free half hour at lunch today, so popped into American Golf today, and tried out a couple of clubs.

They waved their magic wand and, without any warmup, I was hitting my driver 245 yards dead straight, my 3h 210+ yards, also dead straight. my swing speed is somewhere around 95-98 mph.

I was 'thinking' about adding a 2h to my set. They didn't have any regular shafted clubs, so I tried a Ping I15 with a stiff shaft.

Funnily enough, it was perfect for my swing/swingspeed. I'll pop back next week when I've got that spare £139.

It's grand being great.

Funny thing tho'. On the course I can't remember the last time I hit over 220, and I hit a perfect 3h recently that was measured at exactly 200 yards including roll. And Ping measured my swingspeed at nearer 85ish mph.

Must be me........

:o

Your not saying AG launch monitors are wrong are you:smirk: I know when I went once they had my 7 Iron at 170 yards carry which I knew was impossible. So I went to our practice ground hit around a dozen balls stuck a flag in the ground where I hit them from took my trusty Bushnell over to the balls I had hit and sure enough they had all gone between 140-145 yards carry. I find their readings at least 30 yards over per club to be honest. I only buy clothing from them and nothing else. On that note I am off to get some kip as I am knackered from all this posting!!

American Golf do seem to have the uncanny knack of custom-fitting you to what they have actually got in stock.

Me too. I think my gripes with AG are well known on here anyway but I do find them a nightmare to get decent customer service for clubs and that their monitors are inaccurate at best. Add to that some of the staff in the three stores close to me don't know how to interpret the data it brings up and you can see how easily punters can be swayed and walk out with something that doesn't suit (usually in the Yonex, Wilson or Nicklaus range). Even their clothing isn't that great anymor and there are loads of good online stores (Function 18 etc) that have the latest clothing ranges at decent prices

No the results from the monitors are totally inaccurate I find. I wouldn't trust them to fit me for a glove never mind clubs. The nearest one to me is in Sheffield and to be fair I have had some good clothing bargains in there down the years, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger end of season sales were very good. Yes they always push the usual brands like those you mention also I find that some of the staff clearly don't play or follow Golf as their knowledge is pitiful. So a definite no no for me.

Hacker, before parting with cash try it back to back with the amp

I had the i20 driver back to back with the amp and it was just that bit better, and I've got to be honest and say the 2h 17* is twice as good as the driver

When it comes to AG and in most other circumstances in life. It always helps to know people, I have know gripe buying from AG because I know a specific fella in my most local one (78 miles away!!) that always sees me right. The most annoying thing for me is that my closet Golf store, apart from the 'Portacabin' that is called our Club Shop is 30 miles away which is a big hassle when it comes to buying gear

The problem is I knew the manager at AG in Birds Hill. It was him that almost got me to work for them and so I've seen some of their sales targets etc when we got round to talking salary and commission. At the time he had two other members of staff that knew their stuff. Since they've left it has reverted to type and similar to the other local ones is filled by staff who don't play and so have no real product knowledge. I asked a girl in Slough if the Burner superfast had any other shaft options as standard and she stood there with a blank expression. I had to explain what I wanted.

I see what you're saying, and it's pretty ridiculous to hire people who don't have Any knowledge in the field that they're working in. I know F'All about art so I won't go valuing Picasso Pieces. But back on AG it just so happens that the guy who I'm familiar is the nephew of the guy who I bought my wedges from.
But equally in the same shop there are some right knobs who I wouldn't give the time of day to. But it is the same in the Nevada Bobs across the road there is one guy who lives and breathes golf and was more than happy to help me but I wouldn't go back because of the service provided by the pro who works there. It's the luck of the draw with who you know and who you get.

This is part of the AG problem. Some stores seem happy to recruit golfers. OK they may not be fantastic players but they have an interest and an enthusiasm and that reflects on the way they deal with customers. Some just want to get staff in who are happy to work in a shop/retail for not much cash and pretty rubbish commission but are just happy to have a job. They have no idea about the products and the game itself and probably mis-sell the majority of gear they shift. Not knowing they punt what they are told to punt whether it fits a buyers profile or not.

I haven't been to NB or any of the other chains as I prefer to use my pro or the guys at the local range where I can try before I buy and get all the advice I need to make an informed decision.

There's only 2ppl I will deal with at AG and thats purely because they are recognised pros... yesterday one was busy so I waited for him to finish what he was doing after telling the sales assistant I was purely browsing twice...

That is part of my problem there are no decent local shops around. Otherwise I'd gladly give them my business. The thing is there is more than enough customers in my local area to warrant a shop just no one has the means to do it. Anyway this is what I'm stuck with
