you played the back 9 of your course first ?

Just something my m8 and I have been discussing. He always has a mare of a start, but not if we start from 10.

The first 3 holes at ours are pretty tough with OOB down the right on all of them. So if you're not swinging well from the off then you can really wreck your card before you even get going.

Whereas the back 9 starts with an easy Par 3, a tough-ish par 4 then an easy par 4. So you can get away with being a little wayward to start with.

Plus, by the time you get back round to the front 9 and loosened up a bit the first 3 aren't anywhere near as daunting.

So, do you think there is an advantage to be had at your track if you played it the other way round ?

no, i can be sheer hite on both nines;)

I generally rally for the top nine at my home course but that is because they forgive a fade/slice more than the bottom nine where a draw/hook is forgiven more.

I do shoot better teeing off from our 10th, the back nine is a little more forgiving so can get away with some early rusty swings, allowing you to be fully ready for a few tough ones later on!

not really. they swap the two 9s over in winter time as it gives the sun a little more time to get up and thaw out the greens which are a little more sheltered by trees.

I much prefer the traditional route. much like many in Northern Ireland. :o

Interesting question. Our opening four holes are tricky, none more so than a 228 yard par 3 opener. Not the best starting hole, as you can only get one group away and it's a fearsome prospect for the opening shot. Our 10th is a relatively easy par 4 and as it goes from outside the pro shop would make more sense. You get two pairs away, so pace of play is immediately speeded up and it isn't as scary an opening tee shot. I think it was always designed to be played that way when the course was designed but no idea why the decision was changed.

We start with the longest hole on the course with OOB right, a pond about 130 from the green, then a testy par 3 OOB right and then a reasonable par 4 OOB right. I'd definitely prefer to start off on out 10th Par 3,Easy par 4 then another par 3.

It'd be nice to just settle down before getting to long holes with OOB right.

Interesting as our only "breather" from the tough holes is 10 and 11. Front has 1, 3, 4 and 6 which are all difficult holes and certainly makes it tough in matchplay against higher handicappers. Only downside is it's a long walk to the 10th! I did start a 36 hole comp on the 10th once and actually messed it up - our 1st surely focusses the mind and fast...

I know it makes no difference to me as we have 3 loops of 9 and mix up the starting points for various comps
