As the title says.
I have just re-joined my old course, purely down to financial reasons, and getting
a fantastic deal which includes the gym,and the local swimming pool.
Due to having a small number of members that enter the comps,it tends to be the same
names in the comps every week, and to be honest it is only about 12-20 in the summer.
I really miss the big comps of my old course.
I miss having the buzz of a monthly medal where you have to shoot under your handicap to win.
Its really the same with life, you have to have a reason to get out of bed in the morning.
A group of 12 of us every year enter opens, and thats something i really look forward to.
Also the forum meets,HFH etc theres plenty to play for.
But week in week out it fails to ignite the flame.
Any one else in the same boat, would you play if you had no competition?:)

Id do like you , id play opens ,but I love the buzz round the club, esp on captains or presidents day , or club match day's.. I need the competition & the handicap cut chase to motivate myself , it can be harder to get cut in opens especialy if its a strange course most weeks , most groups in our place play around the same time each week & you normaly see the same faces , its nice to put your name down with people you haven't played with before aswell

I know what you mean, however if they all shot 100 and you shot 99 how would you feel?

Play the course and play external Opens

never joined a club as always enjoyed playing different courses years ago but just started playing again as kids are older now but always play with mates for a bit of bragging rites but just at home playing around by myself tbh.

I would play, but I would also miss it.

Maybe the answer is to play a couple of opens?

^^This, i'd still play as its about enjoying the game but I enjoy competition to so if the membership is well priced perhaps a cheap open event once a month can suffice.

out of interest ....which course have you left and joined? (i live just up the road)

I'd still play as I have a great laugh with all the guys I do play with but I'd really miss the comps.

I'm competitive by nature and I'm always looking to improve and competitive golf is where you find out how good you really are.

i really like Taunton Pickeridge have never played vivary park.

i don't blame you the champsionship has expensive green fees,
membership isn't too bad considering its 2 courses and i only live 5 minutes away

channel course is good value only a tenner after 5 pm now (i think).

i will have to sign you in on the championship one day perhaps, only 25 quid then

I wouldn't miss the official comps, there's plenty of competition between me, Fragger and CVG....
Plus, as has been said, I could just play against the course..

Organise a 'Swindle'!

Many ways of making that fun and competitive.

One of the ones I was in had random 4s and Hi and Lo used to play middle pair for total points. That can be varied as it can be same pairs playing often. There was also a singles comp - £1 entry. Winner got cut a shot and there was another way to get cut or get shots back according to winnings/losses. So success means you need to adopt a different strategy and improve to remain competitive as you tend to lose shots faster this way.

I'd need to play comps and would get bored and stale quickly without them on a regular basis. I can understand why you joined where you did but I think you need to get out and test yourself. I'd play some opens if I was you.

Our Board comps usually get big fields (70-80 each day) and have a definite buzz about them that I would really miss. Practice ground and putting green humming, starter in his blazer, tees pushed right back, all feels like the real deal and gets the juices flowing and the nerves tingling.

Playing friendlies isn't quite the same. I imagine it's a bit like paying football without nets or a proper ref.
