After turning up at the club this morning and finding my playing partners awol after a heavy night. I wondered over to the practice range. Worked on a few small things that have worked there way back into my swing.

Bobbed back into the pro shop for a chat and ending up picking up a Wilson Staff FG62 6 iron (Full on bladed iron)
I headed back over to the practice range with it in hand just out of curiosity to see just how hard they are to hit.... What happened next wasn't even remotely expected.
The first 3-4 shots where proper hand shaking shankers. (But I was trying to leather the ball, one of my little issues with irons).
After settling down and concentrating on a good contact.. WOW. This thing was lllloongg compared to my current 6 iron (Which I hit about 180yrd on the flat with little roll).
My divot was far better and looked pretty spot on and the flight was just how I like it, either straight or a very slight draw
Now this is where I need advice.
My current irons are Callaway X20's with the uniflex shaft (Neither stiff or reg) and the wilson was a S300 GD.

Do I go for a bladed iron with the S300 shaft or do I think about upgrading the shaft in my callys?

NO
I'd go halfway.
Something along the likes of FG Tours, RazrX Tours, MP53 (apparently Alex has some for sale nudge nudge) rather than jumping from X20's to a full-on blade.
When you swing well the blade is a wonderful piece of kit. But think how many times in a round you swing that well. A miss-hit with a pure blade wont go anywhere.

If you can afford to buy them and lose money then go for it. The worst that happens is over the winter you decide you don't like them and go back to your cally's.

A well struck bladed mid iron,is a thing of beauty,BUT missing the sweet spot by the smallest of margins, can leave your fingers ringing, and your ball 15-20 yards short of its intended target.Add in other variables such as tight lies and soft ground, and the margin for error shrinks even more.

I'd say you would be better of with some form of cavity and forgiveness. If you want something pretty close to a blade then the Mizzy MP53, 58 or whatever number it is now range, Ping I15, Cally Razr Tour, TM MC or the Titleist AP's would be the obvious contenders. I don't think its any coincidence that more and more pros are leaving blades and using some form of cavity as even they need a little help from time to time

gotta agree here, however I'd talethe Mizzie 69's in a heartbeat and practice till my fingers bled to use them properly.

I still take out my titleist tour blades (30 years old) sometimes and its the sweetest sound and feel when it comes out the sweetspot

From the tv pictures at the walker cup a lot of the players seemed to be using blades and there are still loads of pros using blades.

Proper blades like the '69 or "Players" blades like MP62..?

I was at Wentworth in May and most of the players I saw had a cavity of some sort in the back of their irons.

Don't get hung up on the blades 'v' cavities argument, and the perverse blades are best opinion.

Lee Westwood uses cavities, as do many pro's, for the simple reason the risk factor is diminished. Yes, a perfect blade shot will beat a perfect cavity shot but in all seriousness how often are you hitting perfect iron shots?

I shot 75 gross yesterday and only had 3 perfect-ish iron shots. That would mean there were plenty of iron shots I got away with. Imagine where they would have finished up if I'd been playing blades.

Blades need perfect sweet-spot strikes....how many exact connections do you make each round ?

I'd stay cavity, or move tocombo's (Nike?) Cavity long irons, blade short irons.

My mate got measured & bought Titleist blades this year. The sweet shots are addictive, but the mis-hits are painful (mentally & physically)

This is my thinking.

I want to get better and having something there to push me to make my swing more refined is what I need.

After the first few shanks/mishits I pured at least 20 balls, when I went to collect my balls they where all in a 20 yard box. This is something that simply doesnt happen with my current clubs.

This isnt the first iron i've tried. I've hit all the ping clubs (apart from the S56 which might be a job this week) and nothing felt as nice in my hands as this wilson blade. A few of the mizzys which didnt feel as nice.

The bladed set I'm liking the look/reviews of is the Cleveland CG1 Tours, which seem to have a slight cavatiy back on the longer irons.
