Would you bother trying to go beyond a 4 hc or scratch?

I was just thinking why bother going beyond these regarding handicap. One of the members is off -1.4 at my club, so all the handicap competitions he is giving a stroke back.

guess its a mentality you gota have , il never achieve scratch at club level ( i have at society) but WOW i would love to be 4 or lower

Currently want to get below 6.6 which was my lowest ever ,

Why not, a scratch or better golfer has access to some of the best amatuer events there is and for a fraction of the normal green fee. And if you regularly play well in these scratch events there is a chance of a basic club deal from an equipment manufacturer.

I don't think bothering is the right word for it. Whatever your h/cap, if you play under it you get cut. You end up with what you get. Surely everyone wants to score better than handicap or there's no point playing?

basic club deals? I thought that would be conflict of interest with amature status? Also what level is required do you have to be less than 4 etc?

Perhaps but the effort to get there and the little or no reward except kudos and not being allowed to take it to earn money are the issues

As low as possible for me. If I though I had the ability to stand on the 1st tee and have to make a birdie or two to shoot my handicap I'd be very happy. If I work hard and eat my greens like a good boy I might achieve single figures in the distance future but anything Cat 1 or below feels like a pipe dream.

No conflict at all, it's sponsorship not wages or prizes.

There is no set level, if a manufacturer thinks your good enough they'll do it but most likely you'd need Scr or better

If plus 2 is not enough, and there are 9000 jobs and 27000 PGA pros ... Perhaps staying amature is worthwhile. Would be interested to hear more about the amature competitions and requirements etc..

Depends on their motivation, is it too make money or be the best player their ability allows?
Fair point, I was just thinking you get to a certain level and the handicap system looses its meaning because your ways trying to shoot scratch or better and the number then became meaningless..

I would because my aim in golf is to always be better than I am now. I'm under absolutely no illusions that I will ever get to that level as I simply don't have the time to practice but if I did I would be pushing all the way to get as low as I could.

My question would be why would you not want to be that good?

From Rule 6-2 on Amateur status.

Note 1: An amateur golfer of golf skill or reputation may accept golf equipment from anyone dealing in such equipment provided no advertising is involved.

Does raise an interesting topic of debate regarding the GM fitting days where clubs are given to the participants. I guess the articles don't class as advertising or the bits in bold don't apply ;) (this is not serious before anyone jumps on it)
