Been a few grumbles at our club over winter, since it got taken over, we now have buggies and quite a few more senior members.

Our course drains well but they have still been letting people out in buggies or them mobillty type buggies as they aren't allowed to refuse them if they have a medical certificate, even if only half the course is open and on temp greens due to it being so wet.

I think during the winter period, especially when it's been so wet that they shouldn't let them out in buggies, i know they have paid there membership fees but if it's causing damage to the course then either shut the course or stop them using buggies.

Gary. Did u get the email the other week? The course was shut for three days and the reason given was they would have to ban buggies so they took the decision to close the course for everyone.

Not saying I agree or disagree with this Btw!

Oh and i'll add to this i've heard that next winter that all trolleys will have to have winter wheels, surely they can't enforce this if they are letting buggies out.

Our course has a few founder members who have been there 10+ years, if the course is too wet for buggies! even them with their disabilities are not allowed on the course. I will add most founders are 60+ with serious disabilities! one with ms cannot walk more than 10 metres without walking aids, but as a true golfer he understands that buggies cannot be used in wet periods.

One would argue that if the course was that wet and they were disabled, shouldn't slipping be a worry, therefore they shouldn't be there in the interests of their own health, you may even find " care of duty " on the clubs behalf should not have them out in biggies in sodden ground incase they slide down banks etc etc

From a selfish point of view - I don't think they should be allowed out at the moment. The courses need every chance they can get and if that means 10 people can't play, so that there's a chance the other 500+ can, then so be it.

Aware that those 10 who couldn't use buggies could use the threat of leaving (most won't if they're older and been there for ages anyway), but surely they'd rather lose those 10 than if the rest of the membership said they were going to walk out because of it.

Things like that should be put to a vote - 'We can keep the course open but it will be carry only, or we close. Please respond with which option you prefer' … Go with the majority. Easy.

There's an old boy at the club who struggles, but when weather is bad he splits he's set, carries 4w, 4or5 hybrid, 6i, 8i, couple of wedges and a putter in a light weight bag, it can be done.

If they are driven correctly with users staying off the fairways and not having the heavy right foot that most buggie users seems to have the ground pressure psi would most likely be less than a lot of the golfers I know who carry.

Unfortunatly chuck a golfer in a buggie and they became Nigel Manson.

We are a members club and we have a strict carry only policy at the moment. Only 9 holes open and if you can't carry you can't play. Harsh? Possibly but the needs of the many outweigh the needs of a few surely and buggies would decimate the front nine more than keeping it open in these conditions already is

I'm not 100%, but I think this (the bold bit) is a myth! It would be reasonable for some sort of compensation, but it seems distinctly unfair on the majority.

I certainly know of 1 place where common sense applied - and the disabled (leg amputated above knee) golfer didn't play whenever it was too even too soggy for 'Medical Certificates only' buggies, but ok to carry (or some trolleys).

Interesting. Minority rules by the sounds of it, makes you wonder who is running the club. I personally would be unhappy with this decision.

the course is very tired looking as it is. I think the decision was made to close the course just to give the place a rest. it is a very busy club. the large amount of traffic through a wet sodden course means places where lots of people walk turn to mud.

they shut during the week but opened again for the weekend. I think this is sensible.

mats wouldn't really help all that much. its the people walking doing the damage, not divots.

I was on about Scousers club are you two at the same place? If so apologies I was not aware of this. If it was made in advance then fair enough but if there was going to be a buggy ban and then a few buggy users started winging and then the club turned round and said well we will shut it for everyone then this is poor form IMO.

I joined scouser's club last year. We have been on temps for a month now at least. The place should have been closed before it was. Since I cant play during the week, I am happy for it to close then re-open at the weekend.

We have a big comp (trip back home to Ireland for the winners) on sunday. It remains to be seen it we will be on proper greens and tees for this. Liverbirdie may know more as he is on the committee.

Right that explains it. Did not know LB was on a committee either. Still good you are all at the same place together

My old course, which I have played a few times over the winter, has been carry only since the start of December.

Strictly speaking, ing, it should probably have been closed more than it has been over the last few weeks. I can't understand how a course can be closed to everyone just because buggies can't be used.
