My wife & I gather a lot of Tesco clubcard points, and fairly regularly use them to have a weekend away at a Marriot hotel with a course. As a general rule, Marriot courses are pretty nice and the green fees are typically about £40, sometimes lower.

Weekend before last we tried Hanbury Manor. I didn't think the course was any better than other Marriot courses we've played (eg. Tudor Park, Meon Valley, etc). We made the mistake of not checking the green fees before we booked. £95 each!!! Are these guys up themselves or what? *And* they'd just hollow-tined and sanded the greens. We felt well and truly ripped off. Be warned.

Hanbury manor is at best a pretty average course, I played in a society there once (around 50 playing) and we were treated very poorly, so I think you could be right.

Wentworth West is terrible value for money. £350 plus for 18 holes is absolutely crazy for what is in reality, a pretty average but perfectly manicured golf course.

Very suprised you paid that! I would of laughed in their face and told them to stick it!

I would send a letter into Marriott if i was you as well saying you are regular customer and feel totally ripped off etc. That is a joke, how the person who set that price can sleep at night is beyond me.

£360 during peak season. But that includes the non-optional cost of an optional Caddie - add £20+ for a tip though plus something at Halfway House if you take though. Part of that price is to limit the number - and maybe make corporate deals seem more attractive imo. - and part, imo, is to equate it to other 'World Class' venues like those in US - Pebble Beach, Spyglass etc.

Might be worth that price to play it once (debatable) but almost certainly not a 2nd time imo. A whole day at Sunningdale, including Lunch, or 2 days, including Lunch (well almost) at The Berkshire!

Best ways (in order) are: freebie Corporate, Guest of Member, Club Charity Auction (or maybe a club Pro-Am).

Anything over £40 without being manicured within an inch of its life, I don't mind good value golf

There is even poor value at that price. Too many clubs think that they are worth £35-£40 a round when in reality a green fee of no more than £20 is more accurate. Also never really understood why a fourball with a member in the group should pay less than half of what other guests pay.

Many of these clubs dont want to attract pay and players as members want the course pleb free ;) Just imagine paying £350 and having a bad game?
