I will kick it off

Playing with thecraw in a 2 ball foursomes at the wonderful Boat of Garten, I shanked a full 5 iron at the Par 3 1st into the car park. Had the car park not been there, it would have finished behind us. As I was out of play, we then had to play thecraw's ball just short of the green but close to the OB fence. I then managed to shank the chip which struck a tree and went OB! Bad times!

worst & most Scary was when my daughter first took up golf, I took my eye off her for 1 second & she decided to take a full swing with her putter on the putting green launching the ball towards the club house window, it missed just, after me having a heart attack we both got a few words of advice fron the club sec who came out, he was cool though as she was little & a beginner & she promised not to do it again :)

Not the worst shot I’ve ever hit but most embarrassing.

Playing an open for the first time at Moray old. I noticed while waiting for my tee time that everyone that teed off used Driver. So I said to the starter in front of my playing partners. Why are they all using driver, the holes only 330 odd yards with all the trouble at 200 yards out. He replied don’t know I always use 5 wood.

When it was our turn to go took my trusty 3 iron to lay out for pitching wedge distance.

Topped it into the two foot high crap in front of the tee and took 3 to get back out on the fairway and an 8 on the first hole.

I was warming up on a range in Florida. Usual stuff, hitting balls into the lake. On the right hand side of the lake, about 150 yards away is the club house, and about 40 buggies, and the starter. So 3rd ball hit, I shank a 5i straight at the starter. Missed his head by inches, and smacked into the windscreen of his buggy. I had to turn away, I was laughing so much. He couldn't work out where it had come from. Couldn't hit a ball after that.

I reckon he'll accept your apology now you've put it in writing :)

Can't remember specifically the worst shot I've ever hit, there's been so many bad ones, especially this year :D

Mine was down the driving range not long after i took up golf. Shanked a iron shot straight into one of the metal posts that divide the driving bays that came back and hit me square in the meat and two veg. Ended up with me doubled over on the floor with tears in my eyes nearly throwing my guts up and my mate doubled over with tears in his eyes because he was laughing so much!

I,ve had loads of terrible shots in my few weeks playing, but the most embarassing has to be the drive I hit at the 8th on Sunday. It is a long par 5 and I decided to really go for it off the tee. Result was that the ball went about 20 yds forward and 200 yds to the right. No idea how I managed this. Ball ended up beside the 14th green. By the time I got to the ball a fourball had arrived at the green. The looks on their faces when they realised I was playing the 8th will live with me for some time.

Oh!

I don't know if that was your worst that day, I remember hitting a majestic 8 irons on the par 3 3rd the same day to 18 inches, possibly less and some numpty didn't even hit the hole with his putt!

What JJF forgot to mention was that we missed out on the prizes by a shot that year and in all honesty despite that horror on the first I don't think we could have played any better that day considering it was greensomes.

We also doubled the last from the middle of the fairway, we were about 160 out possibly more and JJF nailed an 8 iron, purest strike ever which sailed over the back of the green into the OOB fence leaving me no shot at all!

We was robbed JJF, I still have the mental scars from that day!

first time ever playing the ailsa i was fourth off in a fourball the other three had found the fairway i took a 4 iron in an effort to get the fairway but shanked it where to my horror it struck the handle of a powakaddy richoched off it BEHIND!!! the starters hut i just wanted to curl up and die, however the starter to his credit said "sir the fairways are included in the green fee!" i am sweating even now thinking about it

1996: May Junior Monthly Medal

As a junior we have to tee off at 1pm so by the time we have hit the 18th all of the adult members are on the patio and having a social drink. Ive hit a stonking drive down the centre of our par 5 18th and im about 220yards out slightly downhill and im always hitting this in 2.

Out comes my lovely 5 wood, practice swing is good. Set my self up and something doesnt feel quite right, big swing and off the ball goes. By mid flight all is looking good then out of nowhere a hook straight towards the clubhouse. After an almighty shout the ball hits the clubhouse roof, runs up around the upstairs office windows & rolls back down bouncing off one of the patio tables and lands on a practice putting green. While this is going on people are scattering like ants.

Ive never lived that one down.

Playing in a quite a big deal team event, all the other games had finnished and everything came down to my game, I was one down on the 17 which was qite a tough par 3, hit my tee shot just short let me with an easy ish chip shot which I totally duffed, oh no wait a minute that was Hunter Mahon not me ha ha

Just a month or so ago @ Ashburnham in a Pro Am. We'd hit the ale/ vodka/ cocktails/ foam party ( ) pretty hard the night prior and had only got to bed just before 5am.

08:10 on the 1st tee, 5iron in hand. Nice big lunge removes most of the turf on the tee. Not sure whether there was any club/ ball contact or whether it was the turf that knocked the ball the 3yards off the end of the tee.

Then proceeded to take another 2 shots to clear the road which is all of 60yds from the tee.. I am very bad @ drunk golf.

Mine was a thinned drive in front of a crowd on the first tee, hit the tall wooden marker on the ladies tee and ended up 20 yards behind me in the practice net. After clearing everyone one out the way I did, however, manage to find the fairway from the practice net and received a nice ripple of applause.

I can recall hitting a driver on the 1st tee at a local club, it's a long straight par four.

Somehow, and I still can't explain it, I got the ball to go 45 degree to the right and hit the trunk of the silver birch in the rough separating the 1st and 9th fairway. It then bounced back off the trunk and finished on a line with the front of the tee bed.

And all of this happened about 10 yards from the club house!!

Mine are all shanks.

Worst result from one would probably be about 5 years ago. Playing in the 2nd knockout round of the Nairn Dunbar 5 day Open against a young guy who had clawed his way back from 3 down at the turn.

Standing on the par 3 15th tee all square I shanked my 7 iron into the caravan site out of bounds. Needless to say the confidence wasn't great after that and I lost at the last. I haven't played in it since. The memories are still too raw.

:( :(

Too many terrible ones to pick out the worst but I'd like to understand exactly why the most terrible shots tend to happen in full view of your peers e.g. Off the first tee or your second shot as you pass through the four ball that has waved you through. :o

I wish I had a pound for each and every embarrassment suffered!

Well my mishap will stay in my mind forever!!

Driving from the last tee at St Andrews - on the first tee I was hung over but no excuse for the 18th - sliced the drive OOB down the right, ran out under the white rail.
Played provisional drive and it went OOB on the left ... yes folks .. on the right of the first fairway! The distance between the two? Say, 200 yards?

Walking up the fairway, excited Japs shout to me from outside the rail, my ball had been kicked in or hit the tyre of a car and rebounded but I was now sitting five yards in bounds, with it's little bum waiting to be spanked!

I now take my time, collect my thoughts at this stroke of luck and execute the most wonderful ... shank - hit the Russucks lounge windows, then across onto the diningroom windows and ping pong down amongst the cars/tarmac in the car park below!

Me? I just kept walking as if my ball had landed at the foot of the pin in the full knowledge that it was only the 40 or so folk standing beside my shank that were aware of this and not the other 200 gathered around the green!

Well that 200 may not have known about the shot but I relive that experience so often. I never stand on the 18th without dread, easiest hole on the course and see me - a big jelly!
