Got underway today at the Crucible and decent odds of another surprise winner as Selby has off table issues, Robertson not in brilliant form and you never know what Ronnie will turn up. Maguire has HMRC at the door with a £100k bill and Higgins not having a great season either.

Would be good to try and get down for a few games, will have to wait and see what I can work out.

Great result for Anthony McGill turning over Shaun Murphy after a poor season, hopefully he goes on another run.

Reigning champ Bingham gone, Murphy gone, Maguire gone, Fu looking in great nick and McManus rolling back the years.

And the living legend Steve Davis officially hung up his cue today after 38 years as a pro.

Funny how blind fandom sometimes colours the rational thought processes.

Before getting the golf bug snooker was my game, and coming from Northern Ireland, as I do, Alex was my hero.

I hated 'The Ginger Nut' with a passion and couldn't accept his brilliance at any price. The recent drama, the Rack Pack, about this era was excellent in chronicling all the goings on between the two as Steve's star was ascending.

However with the passage of time I finally learnt to appreciate Steve's brilliance and acknowledge that he was really a decent bloke. Particularly when he turned out to be a massive Prog Rock fan. He used his money to bring French band, Magma, over to the UK, and I'll never forget the night I went to see them and they called him up onstage to thank him for his support.

His respect for Alex stood him in good stead and he was so complimentary about his rival's ability and genius when Alex died, despite Higgins having been very ungracious towards him on many occasions in the preceding years.

So sad to see him bowing out after a brilliant career.

Well done Ginger Nut! Truly an all time giant of your sport.

I'm watching the White vs Baird match just now. I always turn over when I realise I could give either of the 2 players on the TV a 30 point start and still have a chance to win myself... :)

I played a friendly game against McManus when he was just starting out . I hardly got a chance to pot a ball, all i did was field for him :o

Alan is one of the hardest guys in the world to play against, you won't see a pot all day and 9 out of 10 of your shots are from tight under the baulk cushion.

He spent many years playing just about anyone for a fiver in the Q Club, he has lots of fivers...

I saw some of Mark Williams' match against Graeme Dott yesterday afternoon. Williams looks in good nick and could be a dark horse for the championship.

Sorry it was Robbie (I think) that was playing Walden, poor stuff.

Saw Mark Williams and he looked pretty good as did John Higgins.
