World Matchplay at Wenworth ran it's course years ago. Peaked in the 80's when Sevvy B was king, has gone downhill ever since Tiger decided he didn't want to play.
Might get a new lease of life in Spain, who knows.
I am gutted, after watching the bmw championship at Wentworth already this year I was planning on going to this as well as I thoroughly enjoyed it. The main reason for the cancellation was due to not having large enough sponsors showing interest following HSBC's withdrawal. That said there is talk of holding a more low profile event there anyway so something could still take place although I'm not sure I will be attracted to go if the field is somewhat depleted of the larger names.
Wasn't there a lot of criticism of the course after the PGA? I thought I'd heard that the greens were terrible and that they needed to do a lot of work - and that losing the matchplay was pretty much inevitable?
