Woods /US Open

Love it.
He will only accept the invitation if he thinks he had a chance of winning. Will be interesting to see if he is fit for 4 rounds. A 16th major for me would put the Nicklaus beyond any further discussion even for those who dont already recognise Cat as the goat.

Oops hadn't spotted this. (Posted in the Professional Golf thread)

But surprised they didn’t wait until after the PGA Championship, he might of played his way in.

Perhaps ticket sales are currently sluggish 😉

Woods will never win another Major

None of us saw Young Tom Morris, the Great Triumvirate, Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan, so we don’t know about the ‘of all time’ bit….but I’d go with Jack Nicklaus over Woods, both as a player and as a gentleman

Surely nobody is surprised at this? Get used to him turning up at majors as and when he pleases as I expect that to be the case for a long, long time.

Quite the logical fallacy.

None of us have seen Pluto, so we dont know if it exists...
🤪
You can continue to copy the Americans and use their vernacular, ‘GOAT’, which was never used in this country until about 15 years ago, but if so then be prepared to be challenged on it….literally no one alive has seen Young Tom Morris play golf so you have no idea at all if Woods or YTM is indeed the best player ever/GOAT……

Or you could say something like ‘Woods is the best player I’ve seen / of the modern age’ or he’s my favourite etc.

Tiger for me has earned the right to tee up at every single major championship until the end of time or until he decides he doesn't want to play.

He changed the game so much and put golf on the map

He has won 15 majors

That should be enough to earn his right to play all 4 of them every year.

Tiger is And always will be golf

I hope Woods stays well away if he isn't fully fit. No point in him doing himself an injury.
We have been saying this for a while yet still he turns up every so often, hobbles, sweats, pulls out, maybe finishes. I'm not sure fully fit is ever going to happen again for him but he is in the territory now of the boxer going on too long, doing himself harm. It's not good to see.

I guess Woods is only 20% behind Jack so must be better!😉😁

There was no such thing as The Masters Tournament in Hagen's day. So removing Masters wins makes the Top Major Winners

Jack 12
Walter 11
Tiger 10

And Hagen might have done better if it were not for some major tournaments being cancelled during WW1.

Don't remember them "jack proofing" courses ...

Tiger changed the game and the golfing world tried to make it as hard as possible for him to constantly win because he just made the game look so simple.

It's another ceremonial appearance to which he is perfectly entitled.

But that's all it is, and let's hope it doesn't overshadow the build up to the tournament
Good luck with that.
The cynic in me says he's only being invited to boost the tournament ratings....
Will be interesting to see where (if) he finishes.

Tiger’s wins, and the celebration / marketability of Tiger by golf companies and golf media, brought unprecedented money to the game of golf for sure and drove revenue from sponsors and media interest

But I am interested to know / discuss what precisely did he do to ‘change the game’? Aside from lengthening certain courses (not especially a good thing)..
Why do sports fans actually care how many millions sponsors have paid for rights to PGA Tour events / how much money the fifth place golfer earns from an event?🤷🏻‍♂️

The game was booming enough in the 90s in this country at a club and participatory level wasn’t it? And the competitiveness from Seve, Faldo, Norman, Langer, Woosie and Nick Price meant that golf TV viewers had a decent field of excellent players..

‘Tiger changed the game’ is used as a truism as much as ‘the sky is blue’ but I am curious what exactly was changed and how this is a good thing to average golfers and the TV golf audience

I'm a Tiger Woods fan, from a strictly golf point of view 😂
But Tiger will never win another Major because of his injuries, his body is broken for playing at the very highest level.
He deserves to play in every Major until he decides because of his record and what he has done for golf in my opinion.
There are far too many excellent players now, which for me is why he won't have a chance to win again.

He got lots of lardy pros into the gym!!

He looked very different to the standard US college grad/country club golf pro that they all seem to be. Daly was similarly different!

But if Majors are the yardstick. He's got to pass Jack.

Look at the folk Jack had to beat in their prime too.

I heard on the radio that Mike Tyson is getting back in the ring soon!🤕
