I am battling hard to gain a degree of consistency with my woods - driver, 3 and 5. I have off the shelf TaylorMade RZR.

When I catch them, they go very well. My longest drive this year (through Garmin s20) was 312 and I seem to average 250-270. So yes when it works, it works well.

When they go wrong, they go very wrong - think Rory hook at the Masters type of wrong!

My faults though are not with the club being right for me but rather me and my ability. However, it is getting better thanks to hard work on the range and the brilliance of my Pro teacher Sarah at East Sussex National.

I am wondering though whether it is better to get new woods now whilst I am learning/improving. If I get fitted with new woods, will that be better than waiting until I am more confident/consistent? Is it better to learn with better, more modern equipment, or stay with the old equipment and then have to 'learn' again on new clubs?

Also, am I really going to notice the difference between my woods?

Thoughts, as always, appreciated.

Nick

rbz is not classed as old as far as technology is concerned. when i went to Wentworth the Taylormade guy said the rbz fairway range was their biggest success as far as performance. the driver is still a beast too

Not saying it's related to you, but, out of all Clubs we use I have the 3 Wood to be the most "personal" club out there, some quality clubs that people just don't get on with, while others claim it's the easiest club to use.
Maybe it's worth visiting an AG or somewhere you can try a few different 3 woods and see how you get on.

Remember trying an RBZ once. The shafts are very long to eke out those few extra yards.

They are flying machines when you get the timing right.

The downside though is that unless your tekkers are perfect, that extra long shaft becomes a liability!

just cut the shaft or do what i did and put an aftermarket shaft in

As someone said if your pro is so good ask her.
In the final analysis it's the shaft that determine everything, assuming you are swinging properly/consistently. Ergo, back to your pro and practice.

The RBZ is more or less as good as anything on the modern market. There's a +handicapper at my place who carries the driver and 3w still, he swears by them and has tried newer clubs and says he doesn't hit them any better than the RBZ.

I've had a whack with his driver and he's right, it goes like a bomb. The only thing I would say is that is they are possibly not quite as forgiving as maybe some of the newer designs. I feel that my R15 3w is a bit easier to hit than his RBZ, but not enough that if I was happy with the RBZ I would swap.
