A few years ago I bought myself a Cleveland Black driver. Great club and gives me more than enough distance. At the time my swing was still developing and the closed face helped keep me on the fairway.

My swing has improved quite a bit in the last few weeks and I now attack the ball from the inside more. Working wonders with my irons and hybrid but unfortunately giving me a severe case of the lefts with the big dog and little dog.

With hindsight I should have got one of those adjustable jobbies but I didn't so fear I may need to replace what I've got.

So looking for two streams of answers. Recommendations of adjustable drivers that have been on the market for a little while and have since been replaced by a newer model

Experiences of those that have been fitted for a new release driver and whether they had to pay an up charge for the shaft they went with

Thanks in advance for your help

Certainly would look to buy last years models, personally am happy with the SLDR I have and that can now be had at more than reasonable prices as it has been superceded by the R15. You could also look at Titleist 913 D2, Ping G25 and whatever the equivalent are from the likes of Callaway, Cleveland, Cobra etc

Have never known of people not having to paying for shaft upgrades when buying the latest and greatest, but it is more than important to get the right shaft imo

X2 Hot and Big Bertha drivers from last year are available relatively cheaply now - even cheaper on eBay...SLDR should be pretty cheap by now as well.
910 or 913 might fit the bill too.

Thanks guys. SLDR is silly cheap now compared to what it was but heard negative things about the stock shaft. Did you stick with stock or change fundy?

Imurg thing with Titleist is I've heard a lot of 910 and 913 owners sing the advancements made in the 915 as a much more forgiving club. I'm long enough -not forum distance long - but average 260- 270 in the summer when the fairways are firm. Desperately keen for tighter dispersion. X2 could be a great shout though.

Shaun will look at the XTD. Heard good things about it and have had a couple of Adams hybrids so potentially won't be put off too much by the Crown slot.

Any other thoughts more than welcome :)

Switched out to a Matrix Black Tie shaft Tiger (thankfully I wasnt paying!), stock shafts a little like spaghetti with high swing speeds! If looking about Id definitely consider finding one with a shaft upgrade

Stock stiff shaft in the SLDR was fine for my puny arms and ~100 ss.

A little light for some maybe, but the TP is heavier if you need it.

I find it difficult to set a driver face open when it's already set closed. Generally ends up being carved right :o

Set it neutral then... :whoo:

I have no idea about shafts, my swing speed is approx 95. The standard reg shaft in the sldr is not to blame for my bad shots

Adjustable jobbies, eh? You're obviously not from Scotland.

There's always one...

how have you found hitting your mini off the deck?

PS the reason I want to set it slightly open is that's how I've adjusted my swing. Set up square to target, club face a fraction open then swing as if I'm trying to hit just right of that. Starts it off right of target and draws it back in ;)

I'm still enjoying my Nike Vapour Speed that GM gave me ;)

Honestly, it's a good club with lots of adjustability (not that I've messed around with it), it's forgiving so when you're not having a good day your misses are not that bad and good hits seem to go a long way.

I think that I tried 6 or 7 different shafts, but the one that suited me best was the stock one.

No idea about how much the shafts are, because it was, yanno... free n'that :p

My experience of adjustable drivers is that you do one of two things:

  • You find a setting you like and never touch it again and months later wonder where you put your adjustment tool
  • They fiddle and fiddle and never get a setting they're happy with as their swing isn't consistent enough.

I was in the former category but have recently purchased a Benross Hot Speed 2 driver, 12 deg, regular shaft and NO adjustment. Price? £40. I thought at that I won't be losing anything really. I'm hitting it really well. I don't hit them all right but if I don't it's down to my swing.

It would be just as well to get yourself fitted properly for a driver rather than experimenting yourself. Of course, some people enjoy "having a bit of a fiddle" :D

I know what you mean but if I do change it'd be in consultation with my coach. Had I bought an adjustable driver we may have tweaked it but as I haven't I'm a bit stumped. Main reason for the questions was in case there was a potential bargain out there to be had as funds are - as always - pretty limited.

I won a Benross hybrid earlier this year and absolutely love it so their drivers are in my thinking. Cheers
