Been playing 18 months, joined my club 2 months ago and was given 28 handicap.

our annual review happened yesterday (3rd) and they cut me to 27.

Played today day in the stab and came in with 37 points to win it
over the moon :)
great start to my year!

how long did it take you guys to win a comp after joining?

Cut before the win, ouch.

In the olden days those legs would've been coming off, one of the benefits of the newer system is handicap secretaries are discouraged from getting carried away, a drawback is that the better secretaries haven't really got as much leeway (sometimes needed for the sandbaggers).

I'll go on record as saying your handicap target for next year is too high :)

Handicap Committees still have a great deal of leeway with recently allocated handicaps.

Oh that's good, I can think of at least one person who will be pleased to here that.

It's got to be difficult when no qualifiers are been run though, would that be likely to affect them?

Well done.

Never won a comp in nearly 3 years at our place.

Best I've managed is second place once.

5 months after joining I literally started again.

Last summer I started to achieve some consistency, made a few top tens and managed a couple of -0.3s.

So far over winter I've been playing pretty decent.

Hoping this year I'll "break through".

Being an older guy, the max handicap we were given when I started was 18 and this was on a difficult championship Course, so I took a while to win at home but I was quite useful when visiting other clubs.

Took me circa three years for my ability to match my handicap on my home course but it was a super learning curve.
