Just watching the Euro Final and the standard continues to improve. Athletic and good levels of skill plus some good tackling and gutsy fouls! It seems to me that a weakness still is power/pace of pass/shot and heading ability (throw ins poor too). Just googled and find they play the same size and weight of ball as men and wonder if this is the issue and perhaps something lighter and more relative to gender strength would work better?

Hoping Norway get over their poor penalty miss!

This comment from Hope Powell made me laugh...

A decent non-league team would beat the England ladies with ease, her comments did nothing to further the sport. Even the best women players can look incredibly clumsy on the ball and the games are strewn with fundamental errors, though it isn't as bad as when it first appeared on TV.

I can see what attracts women to the game but it will never get the same sort of following from men simply because the standard is so low, there's little entertainment from watching even the best women's teams when you're used to following the men's game and I can't see how they'll fix that. The recent rejig of the league structure and lack of involvement at the top level show that even though I think I'm right in saying that in terms of participation it's one of if not the fastest growing sport in the UK?

She's having a laugh isn't she?! I watch with occasional embarrassment as, at times, it does look amateurish and clumsy I agree. There are the exceptions though and in Faye White and Kelly Smith the England team had a couple...

I think it's great that women's football seems to be growing and believe that the standard will gradually improve as more girls see it as something they can take part in and maybe even make a career out of. It's probably only the current generation that has any sort of critical mass in terms of participation. The guys in Kellfire's hypothetical non-league team will likely have played many hours more football in their lives than even the England international ladies; the balance will shift.

I agree with Amanda, it can be a bit painful to watch at times; in particular the goalies.... they can be awful! However I've been impressed with some of the skill shown in outfield positions, particularly at international level.

You have to start somewhere though and as long as it's given a chance, and a reasonable level of media coverage I'm sure the interest will grow.

Watched quite a few of the games this time round and have been much more impressed than previously
Shot power is weak, which is a shame, and the goalies are still the weak link in most teams. Most are small (I am small wnd was also a goalie so I'm not being sizeist) and react very slowly. On the basis that there are so few few shots on target and those that are are weak I guess they haven't needed it improve.

But a really interesting tournament thisnyear

When I was a kid and played football, the weight of the ball was an issue. The modern ball is super light and moves a lot in the air. I wish we played with the ball of today. I don't think you could make an effective ball any lighter and I would doubt it would have much effect for the ladies game.

I agree. It's not quite the same, I know, but I play five a sides with the guys from work (outdoors with a regular football) and don't have any problem with the ball.

Surely this is a wind up???? The balls of today are SO light,my 5yr old plays with a modern Adidas ball & as no problems so I'm pretty sure a bunch of fit athletic women will cope just fine

Nope - just trying to figure out why they kick it so weakly in the main!

I'd have thought cycling or rowing would've been up there in growth... Though judging by the additional numbers I now see at the nearby athletic clubs training nights reckon that is also on the increase... Post Olympic effect I suppose...
