Ok, I'm almost certainly going to regret starting this but I'm just looking for information not another debate. Why? Because I'm interested and don't know the answer myself. :)

Much has been made of single sex clubs and that there are (apparently) as many women only as men only examples.

Can you lot list the women only clubs you know of who have exclusive use of a course (a la muirfield etc)? I'm especially interested if any such courses are of particularly high quality, say in the GM top 100 or hidden gems.

I know of a few men only clubs like this but can't think of any similar women only, although I'm sure they must exist.

See if we can manage this without any sexist posts!

I thought the single sex part related to membership, not who could play the course. Are there Clubs that only allow men/women to play the course ?

Lundin is the only 'exclusive' one I know in your neck of the woods.

There are quite a few Ladies clubs that use 'shared' courses - like those at St Andrews

Formby Ladies is the stand-out one in England I believe. Same (inversed) arrangement as Muirfield. Men can play but not be member.

Sunningdale Ladies started as somewhere for Ladies to play, but I don't know how long, if ever, it was exclusively Ladies club. Men used to only have Associate status, but can be full members now. Quite a historic Mixed Foursomes tournament, and a really lovely, if very short, course.

You're right but, for example, the single sex clubs at St. Andrews use the same courses. Whereas there is no women only club using (for example) muirfield. I'm interested in which women only clubs own ther own course and whether any of those courses are any good.

Formby ladies does look a pretty nice course!

Somebody may come along and correct me... but i think for an extra £*** a year (i cant remember) men can play the Formby Ladies Course, although, i do not think this entitles them to membership....

Stu C had an email from them, so he may know...

They seem to have a close relationship with the male only formby golf club. In fact, they used to be the "ladies section" of that club.

It's not a top 100 course but there is Wirral ladies golf club, although no longer single sex. You may find it interesting to know they have this press release on their website:-

Wirral Ladies’ Golf Club has reached a significant milestone in its long history. Since the club’s inauguration in 1894 the club captain has always been a lady. In order to comply with the 2010 Equality Act and after lengthy consultation with the membership the club has voted to appoint joint captains, one of each gender, for 2013 and subsequent years. The two captains elect who will be confirmed in office at the next AGM in March are Mr John Hughes and Mrs Janet Mills.
The 1894 articles of association of the club dictated that committee members should be all female and that structure remained in place until the late 1990’s. Men members were then given the vote and consequently they have been able to serve on all committees. More recent equality changes have allowed male members to stand for election as chairman of various committees and three years ago the first male chairman of the Management Committee was appointed.
Wirral Ladies’ has been a genuine mixed gender golf club for many years with both men and women enjoying equal access to the course. The club continues to promote itself as a friendly club providing opportunities for golfers of all ages and abilities. The delightful heathland course has been independently portrayed as “a hidden golfing gem” and Club Manager Peter Greville describes it as “a short, but challenging course that requires accuracy in order to score well”. Nevertheless, it is an ideal course upon which both established golfers and newcomers can develop their skills.
In 2012 the club became the first on the Wirral to achieve the Golf Mark accreditation and Cheshire County Development Officer Craig Thomas said “Wirral Ladies’ is a well established club which has already worked hard to introduce people of all ages to golf. The Golf Mark achievement now allows the club to build on that success. It is good to see such a long standing organisation taking a proactive approach to the future and laying down plans to encourage the next generation of golfers.”
The members are very mindful of the great traditions of Wirral Ladies’ Golf Club but this historic change to appoint joint male and female club captains further demonstrates the club’s ability to adapt and move forward.

BTW Formby ladies is a cracking little course, like the main course in miniature.

I know of a few courses that are owned by women that are not women only courses.

We have three here : Abbotsley and Cromwell owned and run by Vivian Saunders and The Meridian owned by her and Jenny...(can't recall her surname) runs it. Vivian was on BBC News stating that Muirfield should be off The Open rota if it remains male only.
