I started my winter work with my pro last Thursday.

I've highlighted a few areas of my game that I want to work on over the winter months. 1st up is going to be short pitches inside 100 yards.

I decided to take a "Before and after picture" of the results.

This picture was taken a week before my lesson using my old action:

No what you'd call terrible, but not pretty inconsistent.

After reviewing my action on his iPad he made a few changes.

1. Ball more forward (Just off left heel)

2. Less forward shaft lean (He wants me to use the bounce a little more)

3. A little more knee flex

4. Lower hands

5. Better takeaway position keeping the club head fractionally outside my hands going back.

6. Correct alignment

Initially, the changes felt so, so strange. In all probablility because my previous set-up was very upright. I've worked on the postural changes on the practice ground, range and even in my front room  in an attempt to get the new set up posture feeling more natural.

Hit the range at lunch today, warmed up with a few 7 irons, which weren't great, then moved onto the short pitches.

Here's todays spread:

Night and day as far as I'm concerned.

Much closer to the flag, with a much tighter dispersion. Out of 25 balls hit, 18 were inside 20ft. The action still feels a little strange keeping the club head just outside my hands, but the results and how quickly they have come have really surprised me.

Contact has improved, even though the ball has been moved quite a bit forward. Flight is more consistent and controlled and the ball seems to be spinning more on landing. Varying the hight of the pitch also seems easier this way.

My Pro, Chris, has advised that, with this technique I can use anything down to a PW to alter distance, flight and spin characteristics of a short pitch. So plenty of time on the practice ground now over the winter getting consistent yardages.

So far, so good

No particular reason of this thread. I just felt like sharing :)

Well done mate, great improvement. It must be great to be making progress straight out of the blocks. Let's see a flag that's got a hole full of balls at the bottom in March :D

Got a lesson to solve a small swing issue tomorrow and after that I'm with you all the way. Short game work all winter with the odd lesson to keep the full swing ticking over. If I can sort the chipping out the handicap will drop. Its what is really holding me back now

Nice work!! Did your pro get you to open the face slightly , or do you set the club up square ? Ive started opening the face a little to use the bounce with good success!!

Great thing about winter practice Pal... Is that you know the exact carry distance as theres next to no roll..... Onwards and upwards Pal....

Are you using range balls Gaz?

Or ar these your old and battered ProV's..?

They weren't my practice Pro Vs Ian no. Luckily the range I use is a Cleveland/Srixon centre of excellence so the range balls are very, very good. I was getting a bounce and the ball holding up.

I'm looking forward to going to the course tomorrow morning to see how the pro v1 reacts.

My pro like to keep things as simple as possible, so opening the face is not something he likes me to do (just yet).

The club face is square to target but the club has very little forward shaft lean so the bounce is still present. I'm holding the club very flat, and what feels low (when it isn't) to play this shot.

Intresting that hes moved the ball forward in your stance as most of us are told to move the ball back , i may have to try that!!

Same distance as the first PJ, just the next bay along.

I was actually looking for the exact yardage mate, purely because im also
working on my short game at the moment.
I was looking to compare.
A good improvement in the 2nd from the first.
Are you using any of the clockface drill?.
I am and im finding it very consistent for yardage.

You really need to get within 6 foot to have a realistic chance of holing out. 20 foot might as well be any where on the green. Statistically, golfers don't hole much outside 10 foot.

Its a good time to practice though, and is also on my list.

There was a teaching Pro at the London Golf show, that reckons you should have the ball off the inside of your left foot which is set at 45 degrees, a closed stance right feet drawn back and your hands level, not in front of the ball. Seems to go against all the teaching I have heard.

Just remembered his name Gary Smith.
