Just a quick question, is there a rough rule on how your scores will differ during the winter months? With the ball not carrying as far and the heavy conditions I have already noticed I dont seem to be playing as well. Is this the weather or me just having a few bad rounds? I seem to be hitting 4 or 5 extra shots per round.

It depends on your game to be honest. If someone doesn't hit the ball that far in the air I can see that their scores would go up as they don't get the benefit of roll. It also becomes more important to know roughly how far you hit each club as you have to carry the ball to the pin rather than playing a bump and run type shot. Staying out of the rough is also more important when its wet.

This is a generalisation (and before the high handicappers get all touchy this isn't a dig) but I would expect lower handicappers to see less impact on their scores than higher handicappers. This is because lower handicappers would be more comfortable hitting longer clubs into greens, would keep the ball out of the rough more, would be more consistent and accurate with their clubbing and would generally have better short games.

EDIT: This is assuming your course is the same length as summer.

Our place is Def easier during the winter, but then the course is over 1000 yards shorter, with no rough and the greens stopping the ball dead from any distance.

Two stableford comps in the last 2 weeks, both with winter rules and shorter tees, still playing to full greens though. Both won with 42 points, by mid handicap players (12 handicap). Lots of scores better than 36 in both comps.

Well we played white tees to full greens on Sat , 13 hole comp ..3/4 handicap .. Placing everywhere.. course in great condition

I shot level par 31 pts .. happy out .. seeing as my putter seems to have gotten the hump since the new shineys went in the bag .. 2 birdie putts out of 10 .. 6 of the 8 missed were very makeable too ..

36 pts won it ...

Being able to place in the rough is responsible for the big scores i think ..

Just compared scores from our stableford on Saturday with a couple from July/August on 'How did I do' - almost exactly same sort of scores. I wasn't playing at the weekend but I'd doubt you could fire a shot straight at the flag with a long iron and expect it to stop, you couldn't when I was out on Thursday.

Course is full length and apart from a bit less run not much different to summer - It's off mats from today though

Winter golf is easier.

Softer conditions mean the fairways play wider and the greens play bigger. The rough is down even if you do miss fairways.

Averaged 1.4 shots under my h'cap thru last winter. Expect similar this.

I agree that in part it is easier in that rough is non-existent / less penal and greens usually stop the ball almost dead as they are much softer (unless frozen!!), but on the flip side the ball isn't travelling as far so shorter hitters might suffer, plus with much softer fairways, if you're a little fat in the summer the club is more likely to bounce off the turf, where as in winter it will slice down like butter and affect your shots more.

I know I shot my best ever gross score in December, so with my game I think perhaps winter golf could be easier.

shot my best round of +4 at my home course last year in winter.

equalled that score at my new course in the summer!

we had this debate before about placing. especially if its is "through the green". if you allow me to place the ball and allow me good contact every time I will score pretty well. many on here claim placing doesn't really give any advantage. I beg to differ!

soft greens and placing should mean low scores!

I wish our rough was non-existent. It's not as long as in summer but still long enough and thick enough to make things hard. Playing round our course is definitely not easier in winter, it just requires different types of shots.

Scores on the Marquess will be worse , Duchess better and expect Dukes to be about the same

Not much difference really - during the summer the course has tight fairways, plenty of rough and very firm greens - making for tough approaches and quick putts. Now the course is wet the fairways are wider, the rough has been cut and the greens are open for target practice - so if anything scores should be lower.

I'm scoring a lot better, partly due to our greens being a bit slower.

We'll still of the back tees and full greens but find I'm hitting a club or two extra into greens. Doesn't seem to effect me too much as I'm equally poor from 100 yards as I am from 130.

Stableford have been won with between 40-42 over the last couple of months and standard scratch was -1 this weekend.

Scores are always better. Our course drops to 14 holes (avoids the big hills for some reason. 2 par5's and 2 difficult par 4's. These can and often are card killers)
Sunday was the start of our snow cup. Won by a 12 handicapper shooting a -2 gross score for 40 points!!! He's the handicap secretary too.

My scores seem to be better in the winter. The course is quite a bit shorter and the heather and long grass has died back quite a bit. Playing in our sweep, with three quarters handicap I have scored 38 points in the last half dozen outings. Never managed that in the summer.

The course plays longer. Wet rough and wet sand penalise errors more. Greens arguably not as smooth. Weather conditions are trickier. That said, I love the challenge. At this time of year I'm happy playing on a full course and just being out there.
