Had our oppos cancel for tomorrow because they don't want to play temp greens & 'carrying is out of the question'!!!

Been trying to pin them down since Nov, but they prefer Friday's and are away for 3wks in Feb.

What's the point? It's the WINTER LEAGUE!!!
I don't do bitchy emails, but our Sec. is getting one on Monday;)

Edit: can this be moved to the lounge where the proper rants live!!??

Does the game need to be played by a certain day ?

Thankfulyl we have rules in place in regards carrying and temps - the game must be played if the game is arranged regardless of course conditions

Try enter the winter league and weekends aren't good for them? How many people can actually play during the week in winter.

Yes, we had that in the race to dubai comp the other year.

"we both work saturdays, and like to play in our winter league of a Sunday" - hard cheese mate, we're not taking a day of work.

Semi retired 50 somethings!! Ruined the housing market, spoiled the pensions, now intent on torpedoing my chance of winter league 4bbb glory.

This is one of my pet peeves. If you enter a Winter league then you play irrespective of the conditions.
I've had similar situations myself and annoys the crap out of me.
As for only wanting to play on a Friday, that's just ridiculous,

If your playing in the winter league and the course is open thats game on as far as im concerned.

Absolutely, it's not really about the winning. We played today, gave away bucket load of shots off the yellows and 9 temps, but it was a laugh (we got stuffed) but to hear 'carrying is out of the question' makes their entry a joke.

Unless it's controlled by the club to some degree I think winter league comps are dying for all the reasons mentioned above.

They've become just too much of a hassle to arrange and far too many people have ridiculous restrictions & excuses, if your not flexible don't enter.

My old club had a Super 16's, 2 leagues of 8 pairs playing against each other then the winning pair of each league played out a final, decent pot and more importantly ran and played by people you know weren't going to mess each other about, shame when you have to form your own breakaway comp but hey, needs must 🏌

Our club changed the format of ours slightly to help with this. You play 8 rounds betterball and you best 6 scores count towards the league table.

Top 16 go through to the knockout match play stage and it's just straight knockout from there.

But do you still have to arrange those matches yourself or does the club put a stipulation that they must be played on or by a certain time, without that I think the problem will constantly exist.

We have 8 leagues of 6 teams with all leagues having to be complete by 31st Dec - top 2 in each group goes forward into KO. Any games not played by 31st are null and void - this year we had one game not played. It's the most popular comp of the year.

Same format as ours, it's very popular.

Couldn't agree more, winter 4 pairs is even worse!

I was in the winter singles a few years back and gave my opponent 3 dates. He declined the first two and accepted the third. 48 hours before the match he asked if he could reschedule as he wears glasses, rain was forecast and it wasn't fair for him to play in the rain.

After asking if he was serious I asked why he entered the winter comp in a country that's known for rain..... He couldn't answer

we don't have a winter knock out, but the summer ones at my club are bad enough. I do wonder why some do enter these things, when they try everything to not have to play.

Ours 5 comps were free, but with the amount that entered and games not played it was decided to charge to try and discourage people entering with no effort to play their games. it hasn't worked, i wont be bothering this year as its just too much hassle trying to get games arranged.

which is a real shame.

We introduced a new winter league format to avoid all the hassle mentioned. We now play every Saturday and Sunday throughout the winter, stableford winter league, with your best 5 scores throughout the winter being added to your partners. We found this suited most people as some only wanted to play when the weather was ok and the rest of us golf nuts will be out regardless. Seems to work for us.
