We have now started our Winter comps that are 14 holes. We play off 3/4 handicaps but use our 18 hole cards and just cross out the holes that we do not play. Today we did not play SI 1,2, 9 and 10 and we use the yellow SI on the card. A 20 handicapper now receives 15 shots so would expect to receive two shots on one hole as only 14 holes are being played.

However the way it is set up, those fifteen shots are now used up on the 18 hole card so he does not get 2 shots on any hole and loses a shot on 16, 17 and 18. With the holes that were in play today that effectively meant that he only received 11 shots. Is that correct as there was a loss of 9 shots for playing four less holes?

You play your shots on the holes with the relevant SI

So if you have 6 shots for example - you have a shot on SI 1-6

If you don't play for example SI 2 or 5 then you don't get to transfer those shots onto SI 7 and 8

Yes. That is what I would have thought should happen but we still have SI 15,16, 17 and 18 in a fourteen hole competition. A 2 handicapper also didn't receive a shot because SI 1 and 2 were missed out and not replaced.

That's correct

When our course goes to 12 I lose 3 of my 5 shots :(

Is this singles or teams.

Then what is the reason for it being 3/4.

Because it is a 14 hole comp now. 3/4 handicap is fine if you are playing with a 14 hole card but keeping the 18 hole card in play with SI 1-18 is where the problem lies. They did print some revised SI's for the various 14 hole combinations that we play but someone decided that was not the way to go so we are not to use them.

Why do (the collective) you let them carry on then?

It is a thankless task and generally they do a good job. They appear to have got their knickers in a twist on this occasion and this was the first 14 hole comp of the year. There hasn't been a problem in previous years so hopefully they will have a rethink before next week.
