Guys (and ladies),

Like most people, I have had to return to work this week and was dreading it, the only saving grace was the fact that I shot my best ever score last week, 79 gross (net 61!), and couldn't wait to tell a workmate, who is also a keen golfer. Imagine my surprise when he turned round and said, "so what? winter greens don't count!"

Now I understand the argument about the cups being a bit bigger, but the putting surfaces are not exactly pure rolling, the yardage markers are out by upto 30 yds, which leaves you guessing which club to use if you don't have gps like me.
So i guess the question I'm trying to ask "Do winter greens count?"

I wouldn't say so, I wouldn't take anything from a shorter course really.

I shot a gross 5 over 2 weeks ago on temp greens with normal size cups but it doesn't make me a single figure player. I have never broken 80 on a 'full' course.

Never the less, its a great acheivment, being able to score so well when things like markers are out and greens are rough is very good. It counts too you as a great round and thats all that matters.

Am sure your collegue would share your delight if he had shot the good score himself!

I do think there is an easier element to winter greens as amny are cut way in front of normal greens and therefore take trouble like bunkers out of play. That said you were obviously striking the ball well so all credit for that. Not usre it would have counted for handicap purposes but it was a good score anyway. You just need to convert that to the proper course when all the greens are open.

When we do have winter greens - thankfully not often - most of us get the ball on the green, add 2 and pick it up unless you're within 5 feet then you have a go. Saves time and if you roll one in from over 5 feet its pure luck, even with the larger cups. We never really worry about the score on ours, its the tee-to-green that matters.

I think they do count, its the same as people playing off mens tees and not whites. The other week the course reopened after 11 days and 2 holes where less than winter greens, one had a hole cut in 1 inch grass about the green!! birdied it

Who knows, as long as the game is making you happy thats all that counts.

Temps are also a lot shorter than the normal course so it doesnt really count. There were fellas shooting 46 points last week in the ice when off the normal tees they would and have struggled to break handicap.

well done on your scoring. ignore the boy at work, he probably didnt manage to get the clubs out or his only golf xmas gift was a sponge ball cleaner to tie to his bag.

we are only 3/4 handicap on the winter course. greens are not great but hole is no bigger than summer.
I see winter golf as keeping the swing going so i am not too rusty come the start of the season.

It can depend on a number of factors for official purposes, but having said that, if I were on the h/c committee you'd be getting docked a few :). 18h/c shooting 79 even on winters is bloody good golf. ;)

As a value to yourself it should make you feel great, regardless of winters in use, keep up the good work.

I played on winter greens about 3 weeks ago and had 24 putts! played the same course again last week on real greens and had 37! It does make it easier but if I shot 79(temporary or not) then I'd be chuffed to bits, so fair play to you mate!

Depends upon the winter greens.

On one hand with winter tees & winter greens the course maybe shorter. But smaller winter greens will generally be harder to hit, though if you do hit a winter green because they tend to be a bit fluffy & generally ungreenlike, the ball might hold. Thing is no matter what the size of the cup a winter green on most courses will be almost unputtable, to the point you may as well count two & walk on to the next tee, as even easy putts on a winter greens can be missed due to the state of winter greens in general.

A score is still a score whether its a winter green or a short course or whatever.

But the long & short whether or not anyone things scores on winter greens & or tees counts is the fact we should simply treat these rounds in these conditions merely as Practice. No less no more.

But either way a good score is still a good score, but the course good bad or indifferent, is still a good score & nothing should diminish that as for everything on a winter course that is made easier, there will be something about the winter course that is always going to be a sturdier test of the golfer than pristeen Summer conditions would give. No matter how short or how long the course is.

Take no notice, green eyed monster methinks.

A game of golf is a game of golf to me. As long as official handicaps, high brow competitions were not riding on the outcome, who cares. It's not as though you were the only one playing the winter greens is it?

Keep the confidence and good feeling you gained from the game and carry it onto your next one. Well done.

In the OP there is a reference to the cups being bigger. I thought there was a standard size for the cup. Is it common to use bigger cups in winter ?

At some courses they use bigger cups on winter greens to make up for the difficulty in putting on a poor surface.

The club I played at the other day with FFTD have normal size cups for winter greens but granted, there winter greens are better than some proper muni greens I have played on.
