Obviously this thread is not aimed at the lucky people whose clubs play on full greens regardless of the weather.

I was having a conversation with one of the men today and he was moaning that he and a lot of others think that the club should have proper winter greens prepared, currently we have patches of fairway marked out as GUR but that is about it.

My thoughts are that I am not bothered that we don't prepare winter greens as in my mind I think if we did we would play on them far more often than now. At the moment we only get put on temps if there is frost in the ground on any are flooded.

So what happens at your club?

We play on greens throughout the winter unless there is 5 days on constant frost then onto temps.

Our greenkeeper provided the members with a study that no damage will be done by playing on frozen greens unless it was a constant frost. Everyone was very dubious until this summer our greens were the best I have seen and some of the best I have played on all year anywhere.

On Sunday and Monday we have solid frost - stayed on the greens - heavy rain Tuesday - Wed , Thurs and today greens were perfect - better than what we used to have in the summer.

If we did have to go to temps he will prepare an area near the green and cut a green

We have areas cut down on the fairway to just above normal green height and in Sept they are marked as GUR from which play is prohibited to hopefully make them divot free when they are needed.
We were on 4 today as the normal greens had been pencil tinned .

I believe your head green keeper was head hunted from the belfry ages ago and he has left a legacy of playing on frosty/frozen greens.

We get shed loads of traffic on them on tje the winter and doesn't seem to effect them one bit

Edited: sorry he went to Wentworth.

We have frost greens that are in play until the frost lifts. Then back onto full greens.

We usually stay on our main greens all year long, we have 5 temps at the present time though but that's because essential drainage was started on them right at the end of our competition (qualifying) season, we did however prepare our winter greens for a couple of months prior so they were and are as good as we can get from a temp.

just a hole for the flag short of the green, marked out in a circle about 20 ft across. when its heavy frost we get put on those... Im talking heavy as in rock hard, -2 or so

The problem with this IMO is twofold, firstly many balls will still land or roll onto the main green, so it will get walked on and landed on, and secondly some people will play (putt) off it wrongly!

Temps should if possible always be offset to the side of the main green saving the front of it getting battered, just in front of a greenside bunker ideally, that will get everyone moaning in the clubhouse :smirk:

yep the par 3 are in very awkward places and the more often than not you end up on the main green esp 6,11 and 14

and I bet you rarely see those players taking a drop :mmm:

The idea of a temp is to protect the main greens, so why do some greenkeepers feel the need to put them right up close immediately in front of the main green, what's the point!!

not often, but if you have to walk on to the green to get the ball you might as well play it from there TBH.

Our greens have a big front fringe. Temporary holes are cut in these as necessary - which is usually due to softness caused by waterlogging rather than frost.

Whole of the fringe, and the main green are in play as the green - and although one notes the comments about putting temp holes near the main green, observation shows that the main green does get seriously less foot-traffic across it than would otherwise be the case. Works for us.

Just a hole cut away from the green, flag and a white circle for us. Usually placed well away from the main green. Once were on temps for the day that's it, unless it's just a light frost.
