Never played golf in the winter (or at least one that used winter greens)

Last week or so ive noticed my new club getting ready for it. Few winter greens marked off and now the holes been put it.....WTF.....The holes are the size of buckets?? Is this the way its normally played? no wonder they dont reduce hanidcaps in the winter...

Yes it is. Normally because the greens are so bad you need a hole like a bucket to stand a chance of holing it. Hate winter greens.

Sounds like just the thing for me, reckon I might manage to sink a putt or two at your place!

We use one winter green and a couple of winter tees but in general our winter leagues are played over the same course as we play in the summer. No doubt it helps that we're a links course mind you.

We will play all of the winter on normal greens and most if not all of it off normal tee`s. The only time they will put us on temps is if they are doing something to that green... its not happend to me yet!

I would be gutted if it were any different, in fact I would not be a member if they played temp greens and tee`s, what would be the point of paying to not get what your need to play the game.

If winter greens were compulsory at all clubs,i'd seriously consider not playing at all in winter.Except under extreme conditions, tees and greens will not suffer during winter play.In fact, the worse tee's and greens i have played on,were at the first course i joined, and they used mats for tee's,and the apron of the green as a winter green, for the majority of the colder months.

yes our club occasionally uses the bucket size hole on some of the temps. waste of time, but still better than not playing golf at all...

We are lucky we play on normal greens and faiways all year, would not entertain winter greens or playing off Mats.

I think we only have one winter tee. Its on the 14th and reduces the stroke index 1 401 yard par 4 down to a 165 yard par 3. Other than that the course operates as normal.

+1, except that the new forum will still not allow posts of less than 10 characters - so plus a half and a half.

Our club has tried very hard over the last few years to get us on the proper greens as often as possible over the winter but obviously a heavy frost isn't going to help and so we switch to temps with a large hole. We never have winter tees. To be fair if there is a thaw, the green staff will put later starters back on proper greens

We only use winter greens when there is a frost, but the course reduces to 15 holes. This is because of the heather and there being no room for a temporary on three of the par 3's. Normal tees except the 3rd, where we use the original tee, before the hole was altered.

Our only concession to the elements is mats on the par 3 tees. I've yet to play on temps at APGC and I hope I don't have to. In fact this winter I'm not going to play at times when temps would be used, Frozen ground especially.

Couldn't care less if golf clubs put winter greens on from November the 1st to mid March. Greens need protected so I am in favour of resting them.

To be honest I dont often putt out in winter, I golf for exercise and fun. Winter golf for me is about trying to keep a swing going and staying warm.

It depends on the weather really. If it's frozen solid, they put temp greens on, otherwise we play the regular greens. Occasionally a couple of mats creep in to protect specific tees, again only if the weathers bad. Overall, most of the course stays in play. Have one temp green coming into play in the next week or so whilst they do some work on one of the greens.

I really am a fair weather golfer, I haven't played Winter Golf regularly for years! However, after the summer I have had I am making sure that I get out and play. I need to keep my game together as I don't want to return next year and take a couple months to get back up to speed!

Unfortunately my course sucks for Winter Golf. We are always off mats and we do have temps when needed. We have a 9 hole and sometimes they will put an 18 hole together with the use of the 9. But I really don't see the point in going out and playing on temporary greens.

Luckily a friend of mine is a member at Burnham and Minehead, so I have links golf options to play during the winter!
