I know its a way off but whilst there is some of last seasons bargains about I thought I would buy now.

So to start, can you recommend me a jacket and some trousers suitable for winter playing please.

Thanks in advance.

trousers - definitely worth trying to pick up some under armour cold gear trousers. warm, windproof and showerproof, ideal in all bar heavy rain and a staple of my winter golf wardrobe.

jacket - depends on budget, if you can afford it then a galvin green goretex jacket, if not then the proquip stuff is very good at a reasonable price

nows definitely a good time to be looking, quite a few shops selling off last years

Base layer - Under Armour.
Moisture wicking shirt.
Insula top - they're not too think unlike a sweater.
Troos as per Fundy's suggestion.
Goretex waterproofs - my first Galvin Green jacket is still looking good after 6 years.... although the shrink moths have made it a bit tight... nowt to do with Guinness

Because its always muddy I only ever get my waterproof footjoy pants out and throw on my under armour jacket, if its too cold to get away with that its probably frosty and I don't want to play anyway.

Thermals: Marks and Spencers. Their tops and long Johns are great value.

You wont get a good value Gortex suit. Look at the Mizuno Impermalite waterproofs, they are top quality, good price and 5 year guarantee.

Get yourself a good lambswool jumper. I have loads, a few Glenmuir's, and a few Nike's. All wash really nicely, keep their shape, and I wear the black ones to work.

I've bought some under armour cold gear trousers, and an under armour base layer. All I'm after now is a waterproof breathable jacket.

I know those Galvin Green ones are highly rated, I just can't justify paying £260 for a jacket at the standard I currently play at.

I'll take another look at those Mizuno ones.

Checkout some running shops for base layers and moisture wicking shirts. As it comes to the end of summer they tend to have huge sales on but ALL gear goes into the sale

Another must is a pair of winter mitts with handwarmer pockets/sleeves. I've been told the clicgear mitts are good for those with trolleys.

This year I'm going to get some sealskinz socks. Cost a bomb but apparently worth it?

get the base layers and warm wear right then take a look at karrimor rain jackets and overtrousers. Got mine last year for £29 and I was always bone dry when I walked off the course.

Seal skinz gear is awesome. I used to work outside in the winter, nights etc on the railway. I have a SealSkinz beanie hat. It's absolutely brilliant.

I've got sealskins socks and are definitely worth it. Wear them every week in winter and feet always snug and dry. Think they were £20-25ish but worth every penny.

Best bit of winter clothing I have is a lined woollen jumper. It is super warm and the lining keeps the wind out. You can pick them up for about £50.

HimID recommend the Dunlop winter trousers. Think they're around £10. Also, Under Armour cold gear. MandMdirect can have really cheap deals on them but check regularly.

Yes, I have a Stubert one and it's very good.

Ditto the Stubert lined sweater. Also have a Sunice one, equally as good. Most of the base layers are good but Under Armour cold gear is hard to beat.Trouser wise I have a couple of pairs of Adidas winter ones, similar to the UA ones, water resistant and warm. Sunice do some good waterproofs and there are some really good deals on eBay.

I have had a decent FJ waterproof jacket and trousers for 3 years, still 100% watertight, the trousers are quite fitted with belt loops and a zip fly so I wear them on their own from October onwards, then just back into regular trousers in the locker room.

I love winter golf clothes, I prefer winter golf as I like wrapping up warm and heading out.

15 years as a kid hill walking every summer in the UK does that to you I guess...

In a way I like winter golf more than summer golf.
