As this is my first winter playing golf I have been doing a bit of reading on how to improve my golf in winter conditions,
One of the tips I've seen is NOT to use a premium ball and to use a distance ball. I use a srixon z-star which I believe to be a premium ball, but I've got a fair few srixon distance/pinnicle gold's in the garage.
What are your thoughts on this?
Cheers

The cheaper the better for me personally. Mainly because the amount of plugged and lost balls i have been victim to over the last two rounds.

dammed annoying

Would it necessarily help my game though? From what I've read it's to claw a bit of distance back in the colder conditions and there's no requirement for the spin from a premium ball as everything will stop dead on the green anyway

It's a bit of a myth to be honest, you might get an extra couple of yards but would you really notice? A lot of people suggest using a distance ball in the winter purely as a cost saving exercise because even a hard ball will stop on a soggy green so no need to use £40 a doz balls.

I'd say stick with what you know, i.e i normally hit my ball with a 7 iron 155 in summer and then 135 in winter so hit 5 iron when need to compensate in Winter.

I tend to swap to a Titleist NXT in winter. As a short hitter anyway it helps give me a few more yards and lets face it, any old rock sticks on these sodden greens we have down here at the moment

This is probably a stupid question but I'm new to golf so I can get away with it lol but can I swap balls between holes I;e use a premium for say the par 3's and swap to a rock for the 5's

Yes you can but you can only change balls during a hole if you lose one you have to play the same ball from tee to green

Or if it becomes damaged but your have to show whoever you are playing the damage to the ball.

As for your original question i think it's been proven that distance balls don't really give you anymore distance, in summer or winter.

If you rarely loose balls or can afford to keep using a premium ball over winter then stick with it, or maybe have a look at a cheaper ball but one that you still like the feel of.

I usually use a soft ball for most of the year ( up til now only cheap ones, but that will change.....) and in the winter I use all the pick ups because I lose a few under leaves ( grrr) . A week or so ago I had a distance ball I was playing with and kept wondering why my putts were going 2 feet past the hole !! Lesson learned , back to soft balls and more consistency .

For me, and a few others on here, I find it better to drop to the NXT Tour style of ball rather than the Premiums to cut down the spin.
In Winter, in fact most of the time, most approach shots come up short of the flag
I put a fair amount of spin on a ball and when the greens get soft that spin gives me stupid backspin which often means I'm off the green.
Using a lower spinning ball means a touch more run before stop.
Chips and pitches stop much quicker with a ProV so I have to fly the ball further - and we all know it's best to get the ball rolling asap......

over xmas and birthday ive accumulated 7 dozen Wilson DX2 Soft balls

so looks like i'll be using them for both Winter and summer golf for the forseeable future

Fortunately they are good balls , so im very happy

Speaking to my mates in the US, he does not use his driver in the Winter. Acc to him, the ball gets so cold in the US winter, that it can cause small indentation on the driver face.

Homer.. something to think about..
