Is there much difference in how far the ball goes during the winter compared to the summer?

Just wondering if anyone has a rough guide, just looking at my GameGolf stats and wondering what effect the cold has on distances. I'm certainly getting very little, if nothing at all, roll out on my drives.

Surely your game golf will tell you this? probably the reason I never had one I'm a lot cleverer than I look.

For every 3°f below 70°f you lose approximately 1 yard of distance to a comparable shot at 70°f or higher.
Other things will influence distance including the number of layers that may restrict your swing and strength of the wind.
Rollout is always variable

I'd be more focused on carry distances , overall yardages will vary day to day with the conditions, taking an extra club could compensate for the colder conditions depending how you flight the ball.

Depends how wet ground is .

Golf ball is like a squash ball it performs better when warm.

i normally just assume in cold weather take one more club.

dont worry about it until it gets a bit warmer then you can compare

Couldn't agree more - in the recent cold weather added a club for every full shot.

I hit the ball much better off the tee than of late yesterday and it went further. Strange that. I don't get too hung up on distance as a short hitter and merely see what I have left and make a decision from there

Also, hitting off a mat seems to take 5-10 yards off a shot for some reason.

Only if you are not hitting it that well, as someone else said you get way more spin off a mat with wedges. We had some warmish days so far this winter and have been hitting almost my full summer distances of a mat. Last few times ive played the temp and air pressure have contributed to losing 10 -20 yards per club

I really wouldn't worry about distance in the winter, you'd be better off focusing on how well you are swinging the club and the accuracy you are getting. Get the technique right and the distance will take care of itself once the weather warms up

Why would you not worry about distance in the winter?

Lots of golf clubs have competitions all year round.

Why should you worry about it? Just take more club and concentrate on making the ball go in the direction you intended. At this time of year does it matter if a 7 iron goes 130 yards or 160 yards?

Play a low compression ladies ball when temps are cold. Will go further than your normal ball.

It can really affect drives, if you get a high ball flight you'll be losing probably 15-20 yards "carry" when temp. drops below 5 degrees C.
It's a weird thing - it totally depends on your spin rates, launch, how cold it is, wind etc. (assuming swing/ball speed are the same, which is unlikely)

I'm finding some well hit drives carrying 220 yds and some still going 280+

If you go to the Trackman website you can do a study on wind, temperature etc.
I generally try to launch it higher in the winter, with less spin.

For Irons/Approach, when it's cold and wet I generally add 10% to the distance and take that club.

EG. 150 yards carry = stock 8 iron, but add 10% = 165 stock 7i.
I then hit that as high/hard so it flies 165 carry. Generally, for my trajectory etc. this works if there's no wind...
On GAME GOLF my stats for some clubs are almost identical because of this, as expected!
