Ok, It's been a while since the original thread. A quickie for all the computer wizards. I have Windows 10 ready to install, but have heard tales of woe. Probably myths I know but thought I'd check. I have heard tales of teething troubles, missing drivers, missing files etc.
Should I take the plunge or is sticking with Windows 8.1 not such a bad thing?
Your thoughts and experiences greatly appreciated.

I loaded on my desktop.
Like it so far and only a couple of issues.

I use Promap to download Ordnance Survey maps and I couldn't access it via windows 10, but I contacted them and they showed me how to log in via a link to older windows . Works fine now and just have desk top shortcut to access it. I might have predicted this with Promap as I need to use I.E. to log in and can't use Chrome.
I also needed a driver for one of my printers.

Other than that it looks good

When I upgraded it replaced a driver without removing the old one. The machine wouldn't boot at all due to the conflict of having 2 drivers for the same thing and I had to reinstall at the cost of losing all my programs.

Yes that's right Microsoft, THEY'RE PROGRAMS, NOT APPS!!!

Now it's all working properly I really like it, apart from the fact that I keep getting a balloon telling me my outlook settings are out of date, despite me telling it I don't want to use the p.o.s.

Scaring me already. I have a lot of Fire Alarm Panel software installed that I'm not sure will run on Windows 10. Best I contact the relevant manufacturers I think.:o

Basic rule of thumb

If all you use is normal generic software, (Office, Windows live mail, Picassa, Itunes,Firefox, chrome, Skype, gamegolf, scoresaver 2 )
then you should have no problems

BUT

If you use any specialist software then you must contact the manufacturers website to see if A) it will work and B) if not is there a download available.

W 10 has been out for nearly 2 1\2 months now and I think most "normal" issues have been sorted out now

Thanks for the replies all. I do indeed run some specialist software so will hangfire until I've checked with the manufacturers.

Also worth noting that if you have more toolbars than screen estate in IE you might think again about upgrading. :)

I updated a while back, but I had to roll back because I had no sound.

I've waited a month or two, and have just updated this morning, downloaded news sound drivers and all is good
